YORUBA CALENDAR CHART

The latest printed and interactive calendar chart is Yoruba. This has been produced as part of the THRASS pilot project in Oyo State, in association with SUBEB (State Universal Basic Education Board). Please let us know if the translation and/or pronunciation can be improved.

Yoruba (native name èdè Yorùbá, 'the Yoruba language') is the third most spoken native African language. The native tongue of the approximately 28 million Yoruba people, it is spoken, among other languages, in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo and traces of it are found among communities in Brazil, Sierra Leone, northern Ghana and Cuba. Apart from referring to the aggregate of dialects and their speakers, the term Yoruba is used for the standard, written form of the language.

The traditional Yoruba area - currently comprising the southwestern portion of Nigeria, the republics of Benin and Togo - is commonly called Yorubaland. The Nigeria component comprises today's Oyo osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara, and Lagos states as well as the western part of Kogi state. Geophysically, Yorubaland forms part of a plateau bordered to the north and east by the Niger River.

       BEST FIT FOR MOST PEOPLE
Please advise us if you think that the translation on the printed chart, or the pronunciation or accent on the interactive chart, can be improved. If a good number of people think the same, or there is a good case for improvement, we will make the necessary changes or produce alternatives (time permitting!). For example, in some languages, different words, or similar words with different spellings, may be more common in some regions, especially if it is not the first language. Please bear in mind that, if you do suggest changes, we aim to produce the best fit for most people!
