THRASS UK IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE
WITS SCHOOL OF EDUCATION PRESENT

TIME FOR A NEW PHONICS APPROACH
FOR TEACHING ENGLISH IN AFRICA?

5-9 JUNE 2006

This workshop offers interested parties the forum to debate issues surrounding the teaching of phonics in schools and universities in Africa as well as a two day accredited course on a new phonics approach and two days of visits to schools. This international workshop is likely to be of considerable interest and benefit to people working in universities, associations and governments involved in the teaching and learning of basic English, such as teacher trainers, speech and language therapists and/or teachers of the deaf. Applications from senior officials in relevant institutions and associations are also welcome.

NO WORKSHOP FEES
The workshop and resources are sponsored by THRASS (UK), England, so delegates only pay for travel and accommodation

THE WORKSHOP IS IN THREE PARTS
5 June pm: Registration, Keynote Addresses and Official Reception
6-7 June: Two-day ‘THRASS Accredited Certificate’, presented by Alan Davies, Educational Psychologist & author of Teaching THRASS.
8-9 June: Visits to three schools in Johannesburg, including Masibambane College,
Orange Farm Township, and presentations by two headteachers and an adviser from the UK.

5-9 June 06: Week-long Workshop based at the University of the Witswatersrand, SOUTH AFRICA, including visits to city, rural and township schools and presentations by teachers from the UK.
17-30 June 06: Wits students to visit four schools in ENGLAND & WALES (9 students & 1 lecturer).
