THRASS WEEK

During the week beginning 11 April, there was a great deal of talk about phonemes, graphemes, trigraphs – even more than usual. There was also a lot of singing about ants, babies, hair, squares and whether it’s the ‘or’ in doctor or the ‘ure’ in measure. What was all this strange stuff? Are the children and teachers going completely crazy at last?

No, of course not! It was THRASS week when, for five days, we gave a lot of attention to the new spelling scheme that has been adopted in school. Each class concentrated on one particular aspect of THRASS and prepared for the special assembly that took place on Friday 15 April. That was a great occasion and everyone learnt something new – from how to play bingo with THRASS, right through to “silly” spellings; magic THRASS boxes; “Grapheme Of The Week” charts and the new “THRASS-Hang” game.

Parents were also involved during the week, watching demonstration classes and attending an open evening when they had the opportunity to experience THRASS as a ‘pupil’. Hopefully everyone in
the school community has gained a little more confidence and experience as we continue to develop this new approach to spelling.

THRASS WEEK
Many of you are now familiar with some aspects of the THRASS spelling scheme we use in school. In order to fully establish it we are making next week our ‘THRASS Week’ when all classes will be devoting specific time to spelling activities.

THRASS WEEK 11th – 15th April, 2005
Dear Parents
The school is having a THRASS week, beginning on the 11th April. During this week the children will be continuing with their normal THRASS lessons but there will be a little more of a focus being put on their work as they head towards a THRASS assembly on Thursday afternoon. As part of the week, there will be several “public” events which are designed to inform parents about THRASS and what is happening in school. You are more than welcome to come to any of these events and I am sending you this timetable so that you have an overview of what is going to be happening during the week.

Monday, 11.04.05 2.45pm
THRASS Demonstration Lesson
(Key Stage 1)

An opportunity to watch THRASS ‘in action’. You are invited to sit in on a 20-25 minute lesson with a group of children. There will be an opportunity for questions after the lesson.

Monday, 11.04.05 3.30 – 4.15pm
THRASS ‘Drop-in Surgery’
A chance to ask questions and get information about THRASS in the school. The “surgery” will be in Year 3 classroom. There are no ‘appointments’, just come and join in the discussion.

• ask questions in an “open forum” session.
• see the resources that we have in school (these resources have been extended recently to include an interactive CDRom which you will be able to see)
