THRASS GOES LIVE!
MONDAY, TUESDAY 19 & 20 JUNE 2006

Welcome back to THRASS GOES LIVE! and the next stage of our exciting journey from MPUMALANGA to MILTON KEYNES.

Follow our journey by tuning in to our regular videostreams from locations in South Africa and the UK. See how quickly children learn as they use THRASS and see how impressed the educators, student teachers and Government Ministers are.

We join a group of student teachers from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and Dr Jean Place as they start their two-week tour of primary schools in the UK. The student teachers have all completed a THRASS two-day course and wanted to see how THRASS was taught in UK schools.

The first school they visit is Hollywood Primary School, Birmingham where they are welcomed by the Headteacher, David Waller. The student teachers introduce themselves and we see them working with the children. They find everything a lot more formal in the UK but are struck by quality of the teaching throughout the school and the way that THRASS is integrated into lessons. Birmingham is twinned with Johannesburg and they feel really honored to meet the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Birmingham.

We see the children working on a SMART Board and we hear that they have been making up limericks around the student teachers’ names. The student teachers are amazed how much more advanced the children in the reception class are than children of the same age in South Africa. They are also really impressed by the enthusiasm of the teachers and by how helpful they are to them and to each other.

Finally, one of the student teachers tells us how much she is looking forward to going to the next school in Conwy, North Wales, even though she really doesn’t know what to expect.
