Welcome back to
THRASS GOES LIVE! and the next stage of our exciting journey from MPUMALANGA to
MILTON KEYNES.
Follow our journey
by tuning in to our regular videostreams from locations in South Africa and the
UK. See how quickly children learn as they use THRASS and see how impressed the
party of educators from the UK, Ghana and South Africa are.
We join the educators
as they are leaving the Kwena Basin and driving to meet up with delegates who
have been attending a THRASS two-day training course for a visit to two schools.
They have all been extremely moved by their visit to the Farm Schools and the
children’s unbelievable desire to learn in spite of the difficult environment in
which they live and the considerable distance some of them have to walk to
school.
The first school they
visit is St Peter’s Preparatory School in Paulshof where Greg Royce the
Headmaster tells us how he first encountered THRASS at a headteachers’
conference in Botswana and was immediately won over. The Deputy Headmaster, Mark
Hayter explains that when the school implemented THRASS it was specifically
looking to improve the reading and spelling ages of its pupils, as boys are
traditionally not very keen on reading. Within a year THRASS, combined with
paired reading where older boys teach boys three years their junior, has
produced some stunning results with a 60 per cent increase in pupils’ spelling
ages and a considerable increase in their reading ages. The paired reading has
also had a very positive social effect on the boys.
The educators then
move on to Bellavista Remedial School where we first of all see children in one
of the classrooms working with their THRASS Picturecharts followed by a series
of demonstration lessons in the main hall.
