Underberg Primary School
located in the Drakensburg region,

on the border of Lesotho and South Africa

The majestic Drakensburg rises to over 3 000 meters. Known to the Zulu people as Ukhahlamba, or 'Barrier of Spears', the Mountains of the Dragon provide a magnificent semi-circular border between KwaZulu-Natal and the inland mountain kingdom of Lesotho. The watershed of the basalt peaks divide the rains and snows, some flowing westwards over the alpine plateau of Lesotho towards the Atlantic Ocean, and some down the frequently vertical slopes into KwaZulu-Natal, towards the warm Indian Ocean.

THRASS REPORT

THRASS … bird, rabbit, cat, kitten, duck, school, queen has filled our homes and school this year! THRASS, which stands for Teaching Handwriting Reading And Spelling Skills, is a revolutionary new "whole-picture" keyword system, which will benefit all children on their journey towards spelling and reading proficiency.

The staff of Underberg School were privileged to host and be trained by the author of THRASS, Mr Alan Davies, from the United Kingdom. The scheme is used extensively in Australia, Canada and Europe. We are proud to be the first government school in Africa to adopt this wonderful, progressive system. The system is taught with the help of raps and sequences in order to make learning modern and exciting.

The children love it – spelling has never been SO much fun!
