Can you provide more advice on introducing THRASS at Foundation
stage? |
Yes, the first sheet in the Photocopiable Section
is the THRASS IMPLEMENTATION GRID. I believe that children should first complete
PHASE 1 (stages T1-T5)
Locate and name the outline pictures (T1 Picture Location, TEACHING THRASS p24).
Locate and name the letters (T2 Letter Location, TEACHING THRASS p32).
Name and correctly form the letters (T3 Letter Formation, TEACHING THRASS p38)
Locate and name graphemes (T4 Grapheme Location, TEACHING THRASS p44).
Locate and name the keywords (T5 Keyword Location, TEACHING THRASS p50).
so that they have the foundation to launch with a vengeance into PHASE 2 in
Reception.
PHASE 2
Locate and articulate the phonemes (T6 Phoneme Location, TEACHING THRASS p56).
Blend, read and spell the keywords (T7 Keyword Synthesis, TEACHING THRASS p64).
As is made clear throughout every stage of the guide, and repeated in the
Implementation Grid, it is assumed that children "practise 'reading' the
basewords in signs and favourite stories/books" and (as depicted and explained
on the PROFILECARD) learn to read and spell the THRASS HOTWORDS.
THRASS HOTWORDS
As you move through the stages, especially after T2. Letter Location, teach your
learners to read and spell the hotwords of English. The hotwords are one-hundred
words that we see-a-lot. Use the THRASS Spelling Procedure, “Say, Name, Cover,
Write, Check” (TEACHING THRASS, p82), along with the THRASS HOTWORDS CARDS, to teach the ten lists of ten words:
SAY: Say the word.
NAME: Name the letters.
COVER: Cover the word.
WRITE: Write the word.
CHECK: Check the letters.
If you obtain a box of the THRASS HOTWORDS CARDS, shuffle the cards from a
particular list (or a number of the ten lists) and then select some or all of
the hotwords for your learners to read and/or spell. Encourage your learners to
sometimes read the hotwords by synthesising (blending) the phonemes represented
by the blue consonant graphemes and red vowel graphemes on the reverse side of
the cards (with or without first manipulating the associated THRASS MAGNETIC
GRAPHEMES, T-49)
