GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

Is there any way THRASS can be incorporated into E.L.S. to a greater degree?

As I write, there is an Education and Skills Select Committee (House of Commons) enquiry into 'Teaching Children to Read'. They aim to produce their recommendations in about April 2005. It is common knowledge that Ofsted are not happy with the Word Level strand of the National Literacy Strategy. Both written and oral submissions to the committee indicate that many people are not happy with E.L.S and the other 'NLS' add-ons ('patch-ups'). I believe that there are many fundamental flaws with E.L.S. I think it is better to focus on the 'THRASS 10' stages rather than trying to incorporate THRASS into a flawed 'patch-up'. A question to you: "At what age are you going to move children on from E.L.S and how are you going to do it?" (see TEACHING THRASS, page 9, Main Distinguishing Features, No. 5…"there is no need for any 'Changeover Teaching'….").
