SWITCHING TO THRASS

To become “THRASS Certified”, teachers and teaching assistants attend a two-day professional development course. Usually, the course is attended by all the teachers and teaching assistants in a school. The course is often held in their own school, a neighbouring school or a local professional development centre (sometimes, funds permitting, the course is held in a hotel). The course is always presented by a THRASS Accredited Trainer, trained and approved by THRASS (UK).

When schools are thinking about switching to THRASS, usually because of a ‘word-of-mouth’ recommendation from a teacher, assistant or parent, staff that are able to ‘bring about a change’ in a school, such as the headteacher, deputy headteacher, literacy co-ordinator, special needs co-ordinator and/or senior teaching assistant, attend a course as visitors in another school or centre, usually located in the same area, region or country. Sometimes these staff may be accompanied by governors and/or parent representatives.

Staff that are new to a school, or were absent when the course was taken by their colleagues, also attend as visitors to other schools or centres. These courses may also be attended by teachers, teaching assistants, educational psychologists and speech and language therapists who are working in or with a school that is not using THRASS as a whole-school programme but wish to use the programme with a specific individual, group or class e.g. a child that has a hearing impairment, a group of children that have dyslexia or a class of children for whom English is not the first language.

After the initial two-day training course, it is common for schools to request a follow-up course, a THRASS Revisited course, once the staff, children and parents have been using the programme for several months or a year or more. These courses may be attended by all the staff in a school or just some of the staff, depending on the location of the course, the school’s priorities and, of course, funding.

The two-day certificate course is based on the essential teaching guide, TEACHING THRASS (T-50), which is a 100+ page, full-colour, spiral bound A3 guide.
