Much of
the success of THRASS has been in independent schools such as St Peter’s Schools
in Johannesburg. In the video Mark Hayter, Deputy Headmaster of St Peter’s
Preparatory School explains that THRASS was introduced to the school in 2005
after they had seen it being taught in Botswana. They trained all the staff at
the school so that it could be applied in all lessons, rather than just in
English. He likes THRASS because it provides the school with a consistent
spelling and reading system that runs from grade 0 to grade 7, enabling teachers
to build on each year’s work. He particularly welcomes the introduction of
THRASS 15 Minutes a Day x 2 which provides teachers with a specific work
schedule to work through year on year and enables them to build on learning
skills.
Using
THRASS has considerably increased the rate of improvement in spelling and
reading at the school, particularly where it has been combined with paired
reading, where older boys teach boys three years their junior, which has
resulted in a 60 per cent improvement in their spelling grades and a
considerable increase in their reading ages.
St
Peter’s Girls’ School has now been open for nearly two years and in the video we
see both boys and girls being taught about the 44 phonemes and 120 keygraphemes
of English using the THRASS 15 Minutes a Day x 2 scheme of work. Unusually the
children are not in their uniforms, as it is their termly ‘Civvies Day’ and also
national ‘Casual Day’.
