From January
2009, THRASS is being piloted in seven schools in Oyo State, Nigeria and during
his visit to set up the pilot, Alan Davies held the first THRASS training
courses for 20 teachers from all over Oyo State at the University of Ibadan. In
the video we see them all thoroughly enjoying learning the THRASS SING-A-LONG
songs.
During his
visit, Alan also visited some of the pilot schools to give demonstration
lessons. We see him working with the children using the Phoneme-Grapheme cards
and they are learning really quickly. As Dr Nkechi Christopher of the
University of Ibadan, the THRASS Project Coordinator observes, “Even in the
demonstrations you can see that the children are picking up the words and
gaining confidence in themselves. THRASS is particularly good for teachers, as
it comes not just with the method but also with the teaching resources which
will make it easier to teach and also gives the teachers more confidence.”
The schools
taking part have been given a SING-A-LONG KIT with books, CD players and
batteries, and throughout the video we see them singing and acting out some of
the SING-A-LONG songs: ‘A great big gorilla’, ‘The moon fell out of the sky’
and ‘Ring the bell’. Unfortunately, the supplied batteries did not power the CD
players so Alan had to do most of the singing but new batteries are now with the
schools!
Everyone is
really enthusiastic about THRASS. As Professor Abiola Odejide of the University
of Ibadan explains, “THRASS is different, innovative and fun and I can see
classes being transformed if the teachers catch on. Classes are certainly going
to be very lively and the children will enjoy using the materials.”
We also hear
from Dr Soji Adejumo, Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB)
and Professor Nureni Olawore, Commissioner for Education, Oyo State. Dr Adejumo
considers the situation to be extremely promising and feels that Oyo State is
moving in giant strides, and Professor Olawore confirms that it is the intention
of the State Government that THRASS should be spread throughout the State.
Alan Davies
will be returning to Oyo State in May 2009 to carry out further training and
make more visits to schools.
