GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS ACCREDITED CERTIFICATE
FOR PARENTS, KENTS HILL SCHOOL, MILTON KEYNES

In October 2009, the latest group of parents at Kents Hill School, Milton Keynes, attended the 4-hour (2 x 2 hrs) THRASS Accredited Certificate for Parents. As Hayley Hughes, Literacy Coordinator and Course Leader, put it, “Please find attached a list of the latest cohort of parents that we have put through the THRASS training and they would like a certificate to prove it!” Over the last three years, over 120 parents have completed the certificate course at the school.

The THRASS Accredited Certificate for Parents is an English Phonics course for parents, led by an approved "THRASS Certified" teacher or assistant. That is, a teacher or assistant that has secured the THRASS Accredited Certificate.

The course focuses on:

developing children's speaking skills, listening skills, concentration, memory and intellect

developing parents' understanding of synthetic phonics (using the Natural Synthesis approach) and analytic phonics in reading and spelling

the Say-Name-Cover-Write-Check spelling procedure.

Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, parents will:

know how they can help develop children's speaking and listening skills

understand that, at Word Level (the Phonics Level), reading involves changing graphemes to phonemes [R= G to P] and spelling involves changing phonemes to graphemes [S= P to G]

have a better understanding of the 44 phonemes and 120 keygraphemes of English

know how to maximise children's chances of success with "Weekly Spellings" tests.

Some of the many comments from parents:

"I think it’s fantastic. I wish it had been available when we were children at school. It makes sense of the English language."

"I was considering if we should keep her down this year and not let her go on to Year 1 but with this system of teaching of phonics she’s doing more than I would ever have imagined she would have been able to do with the English language."

"We are so pleased to be involved in this learning to support our children."

"I have found this course extremely useful and helpful. I feel more confident in helping with my children’s spellings and homework and I feel it will be more enjoyable."

"THRASS is a fantastic teaching system and I love the Phoneme Machine."

"Very informative. Looking forward
to using THRASS chart at home."

"He’s coming home talking about phonemes, graphs, digraphs and trigraphs. He never talks about school when he comes home. What’s more he seems to understand it all."

"Brilliant. I wish we’d learnt it at school. Why hasn’t somebody looked at the English language and broken it down before. It’s just unbelievable. And the Phoneme Machine will be really valuable. It’s astonishingly clever."

And from the school:

"We would like to thank all the parents and family members who gave up their valuable evenings earlier this term to take part in THRASS training. Again we received many positive comments about the value of the training. As a school we feel it is important that you are aware of the methods being used in school to develop your child’s reading, writing and spelling skills. Since we started using THRASS in September 2007 we have trained over 100 parents and we are committed to continuing to train parents over the coming years. So, if you missed the training this year keep an eye out for details about training next Autumn.

We were very pleased with the improvement in standards in our writing across school, this was reflected in our SATs results this year. We believe that the use of THRASS has contributed to this."
