In the
video we see a range of demonstration lessons and innovative ideas for teaching
THRASS, helping children remember what they have learnt and involving parents in
what their children are being taught. The children are really enthusiastic and
the visitors are really impressed, both by the teachers and by THRASS, and
everyone is seen having a particularly wonderful time performing the THRASS
SING-A-LONG songs in a MOVE-A-LONG WITH SING-A-LONG demonstration.
Holy
Rosary School is considered to be way ahead of other schools with what it is
doing with THRASS and throughout the video we hear comments such as “Fantastic”.
“Absolutely wonderful.” Everyone attending feels they have learnt an enormous
amount, in particular about the implementation of THRASS, with many of the
teachers saying that they will take back and implement in their own schools the
ideas that have seen. “I loved the practical relevance and the fact that you
could see how to implement it in the classroom.” “Children live in a visual
world today and that is why THRASS is so successful and Alan Davies has hit on a
winning formula.”
A
representative of the South African Government’s National Advisory Council on
Innovation who has been researching the issue of scarce skills, is really
excited about THRASS because she sees it as providing the opportunity to
overcome one of the biggest problems in South Africa, people’s inability to read
and write. This needs to be addressed at the Foundation phase in education and
THRASS is enabling teachers to do this.
One of
the highlights of the day is when Nic Young, Chief Operating Officer of Absa
Bank’s Unsecured Lending and New Business Cluster, announces that, in
recognition of the impact that Holy Rosary has in the community and in order to
extend the broader network of TalkTogether centres, Absa will be installing an
interactive SMARTboard, laptop and projector at the Holy Rosary Mission School
in Malamulele.
Finally,
Laraine Roberts, the Principal of Holy Rosary School, sums up the day: “It has
been a wonderful day and the teachers and children have done both Holy Rosary
and THRASS proud. THRASS and Absa are to be commended for what they are doing
for Africa, for our children, and for the children who need it most.”
