Holy Rosary School in Johannesburg is committed to
excellence in education which is firmly grounded in Gospel values. The children
are encouraged not only to value themselves, as young women with a vital role to
play in the future of South Africa, but also to be caring of each other and to
embrace difference. As the Primary School Principal, Laraine Roberts explains,
they live in a particularly difficult society and are trying to create a place
of sanctuary, where children can leave any worries behind and just be
themselves.
The school sees THRASS as a way of empowering children to read and spell better
by equipping them with the tools to tackle reading and spelling in a more
efficient and effective way.
The children practise their THRASS raps on a daily basis and quickly grasped
a fair knowledge of the positioning of all phonemes and graphemes. They use
their THRASS charts and whiteboards frequently. They also have formal lessons where
they work on a particular sound and have five theme words that are treated as
spelling words each week. The Grade 3 children are now in their second year of
THRASS and they have shown a marked improvement in both spelling and reading
skills. Whilst the school also has an intensive reading programme which has
certainly helped as well, THRASS is acknowledged as having made a vast
difference. The children's spelling age has increased significantly and THRASS
has enabled them to spell difficult words they would not otherwise be able to
spell.
The children really enjoy using THRASS and they have brought a new dimension
to the THRASS raps by developing their own accompaniment to them which they are
seen performing in the video.
The school encourages both staff and children to feel part of
the Holy Rosary family and everyone feels that it is a privilege to be there.
The children are confident and happy, and the staff endeavour to give each child
every possible opportunity to achieve her unique God given potential so that the
girls can make a difference in South Africa and the world whatever their chosen
career.
