GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS  TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE,
KZN, SOUTH AFRICA, APRIL15-16, 2005

Portable Document Format

Thank you Laola for your enthusiastic presentation of this logical approach to the difficult area of English spelling and reading. It’s clearly possible to integrate this into what we are already doing and to redirect children in areas where we have misinformed them. This was a most worthwhile two days.

Thanks Laola for a wonderful presentation of THRASS. You have inspired and motivated me to make use of this ‘user-friendly’ language programme in teaching my remedial students as well as my own pre-school child. For the first time, spelling and reading have a map to follow and to help build a child’s self-confidence in learning language. Many thanks.

Wow! How I wish this had been taught when I was at school. I feel enthusiastic, motivated and hopeful that I now can teach a life skill that is really meaningful for the rest of my learners’ lives. I feel that as I use this method, my own skills and self-esteem will improve. Thank you for a most enlightening and thought-provoking two days.

Very stimulating, comprehensive course which was well-presented. As a class teacher and a remedial therapist, I am very excited to try and implement it in my classroom. Thank you!

Thank you so much for a well-presented, informative and motivating introduction to THRASS. Laola is so enthusiastic and very organised. We were well hosted and it was lovely to meet other teachers and discuss ideas. I have a lot to learn, but look forward to introducing THRASS at our school and am particularly intrigued to see the children’s response and progress.

A valuable course. Lots to take in. I think, if implemented properly, this approach will uplift standards of reading and spelling. Makes sense to teach this from the beginning.

Thank you for a detailed, informative THRASS course. We look forward to introducing it to the children in our class.

A most worthwhile course, but too short! I would really like to hear more and put it into practice. Thank you Laola for your hard work and positive input. I thoroughly enjoyed the two days.

Very interesting approach. Well presented course – a lot of material to come to terms with in a short time. I will need time to come to terms with the new approach and exciting new material.

Very good presentation of an excellent programme which will be invaluable used in the Remedial Unit with children who have learning difficulties. Well done.

Outstanding. Really looking forward to getting started in a remedial capacity. Would like more Junior Primary teachers to be trained. Answered and overcame so many frustrations that I experience when teaching phonics.

The course is interesting. Being a Zulu speaker, it brings in the language comparison which opens eyes. The vowel section is challenging and calls for hard work. Full of fun! The facilitator is enthusiastic and dynamic.

Very interesting food for thought. Would have liked to spend more time on the vowel chart as I found that more complicated.

I found the whole THRASS concept very interesting and intriguing. Through practise, I am sure I will master the concept. It is really a wonderful way of teaching spelling, reading and writing skills.

Very informative and enlightening. Definitely the best approach so far to learning spelling and letter formation for handwriting. I feel the weaker children will benefit immensely.

Very interesting and practical. Makes a lot of sense. A sensible approach to spelling that children will be able to work with.

Exciting! Excellent and very interesting. There has been a great need for a change – to make sense of the old fashioned phonetic system where rules are made to be broken! (Exception to the rules!) Thank You!

Excellent Laola! Your enthusiasm is catching! Excellent knowledge of well-produced, easy to use material. It’s refreshing to be introduced to something so exciting and comprehensive.

An encouraging new way of gaining a “sound” foundation of phonemes. Many thanks. Will certainly make good use especially in the field of remedial teaching.

Stimulating and thought provoking. Motivating. Thank you for inspiring us to explore.

Very interesting! Looking forward to trying this with my 4-5 year olds!

Wow – lots to absorb and many new ideas to share. Thank you.

Very informative and interesting. A lot of information but I look forward to becoming more familiar with the material.

Really something to consider. Thank you!

Excellent presentation. Makes sense. Need to digest and work through it – sifting through the layers as it were!

Great idea. I feel very motivated as a Grade 1 teacher! Well presented. Sessions perhaps too long!

Very good. Would have preferred to have spent more time on the vowel section than the consonant section, as the vowel section seemed more difficult – even for me – so extra training would have been nice.

Interesting material, dynamic lecturer with thorough understanding of her material. Although not all relevant to pre-school, it’s good to know the progression (especially for extension). A well organised course.

Thanks very much for an exciting and most worthwhile 2 days. I realise that we have just touched the “tip of the iceberg” and look forward to really getting to grips with it. As teachers, our pupils and ourselves can only benefit from what is a thorough and impressive approach to learning literacy. Thank you Laola for such an impressive presentation.

Very informative. Thank you. You managed to keep moving through the course material at the same time as giving attention to individual concerns. By the completion of the 2 days, I feel it has all come together and I am keen to re-read the teaching guide and put it into practise. Thank you & well done.

What a wonderful, motivating course – so many exciting ideas/aids to help us implement an excellent approach to teaching literacy. I am sold and plan to shift my thinking and teaching immediately. Thank you for filling a gap in our literacy teaching. A well delivered course, Laola. You are gracious, very patient, very clear and inspiring.

All the material covered in the 2 days could easily been dealt with in 1 day – far too much explanation! It seems unnecessary to make adults repeat everything over and over again. The THRASS approach seems too confusing for the younger grades. Surely phonemes should be introduced slowly. I felt that we were always working from the assumption that all the children know all the phonemes.

Very tedious repetition. Lecturer did not set the world alight – quite boring to be frank. Far too much repetition of content – course could have easily been delivered over 1 day. THRASS has some validity and much that is relevant & valuable, but again boring. Will probably have best application in a remedial type situation. The video (synthesis video) soundtrack not good – words a little indistinct, but exacerbated by music playing at the same time – amazingly distracting – maybe thrown in to make what was essentially very boring material appear more appealing. I shall do my best to take on board what I feel is valuable – unfortunately, this course has been very disappointing.

I can see value in using THRASS, but I found the course very repetitive and at times was boring. As teachers, we probably don’t need as much practise with each section and I feel that this course could probably be completed in one day. A lot of the material to be used by the children would probably not appear ‘child friendly’.

Eye-opening. I particularly like the positive approach it offers to kids with spelling difficulties. I fully intend to incorporate this in my work and possibly do further training. Whilst quite intense, we were taken through logically and systematically with good examples. Lots of different visual/audio aids. Excellent presentation.

A fascinating two days that has left me very enthusiastic and excited! Well planned and presented with order and logic. Lots of discussion and open to questions asked. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.

Excellent. A very practical way to introduce reading and spelling. Extremely well prepared and presented.

Very interesting, stimulating and thought provoking. In some ways similar to the way I have been teaching. Like the idea of learning the map and the repetition. It is going to be interesting to see how it works in the classroom!

I came with much scepticism, believing it was an elitist product, but went away convinced this is what second language learners in rural schools definitely need – as well as the teachers – to upgrade the level of education. Many thanks for a very worthwhile course Laola.

Outstanding course. Very stimulating and most informative. An incredibly accurate and thorough way of introducing phonics. Can’t wait to get started!

A thoroughly enjoyable and most informative course. I look forward to setting THRASS up and getting it running A.S.A.P. Thank you for all the time and effort you have put into training us all.
