THRASS IN AFRICA:
GHANA - SEPTEMBER 2006 |
|
Hilary Davies first visited Ghana
in January 2006 and here we see her on her return visit to do training courses,
and give demonstrations lessons and presentations. The first trip had generated
a huge amount of interest in THRASS and Dr Kafui Etsey of the University of the
Cape Coast described THRASS as “exactly what our country needs if it is to grow
and prosper”.
THRASS UK was invited back by the University to make presentations to hundreds
of teachers and student teachers and we see a vast audience who have come from
all over Ghana to the University to attend a presentation on THRASS. They are
working with the THRASS Picturechart, Graphemechart and Picture Cards.
Hilary Davies also ran two two-day courses for local teachers, for government
and private schools and visited schools outside of Accra to run demonstration
lessons. We see from the shots taken around some of the rural schools just how
challenging the conditions are for the staff and children. At one school the
kindergarten classroom is just a lean-to with the bare earth for a floor and its
roof in tatters.
We see Hilary giving demonstration lessons at Kokrobite Primary School using the
THRASS Picturechart and acting out some of the words with the children. The
teachers and children really enjoyed the lesson on Picture Location.
We also see a two-day course for local teachers from Lincoln Community and Roman
Ridge schools. The THRASS two-day accredited certificate courses were a great
success and these were just some of the very positive evaluations received:
“The course was very interesting and educative. It taught me so many new things
in the English language which will benefit my pupils greatly.”
“The whole THRASS programme has been an eye-opener and also has given me a lot
of ideas which will go a long way to enhance my teaching skills. I must say I
have enjoyed it. It has really pushed me to vary my techniques in teaching.”
“This has been a real eye-opener. I wish I had this when I was young but am glad
the kids can now learn to read, write and spell in a much easier and fun way.”
“The contents will go a long way to enhance the teaching of English in our
schools especially at the pre-school and the lower primary.”
In addition to shots taken around the University and schools, we also see shots
of everyday life in Ghana.
