GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE, GABORONE, BOTS, SEPT 18-20, 2003

Portable Document Format

Very interesting – as a teacher and parent I am very excited about the whole THRASS programme. I wish I had experienced this years ago! Thank you Alan. I hope you get to go to South Africa too – they really need THRASS there too.

Wow Alan! You and your programme have opened up a whole New World. Not only have I realised how many myths I have been teaching over the years but also enriched my own knowledge of phonics. You are doing great work and I am definitely going to use your ideas, methods and material.

We needed a week to cover the content and to see how to apply all the course work to a typical classroom lesson. Alan, you are an incredible, dynamic presenter! You took a rather boring, touchy subject, namely phonics and showed us, as a team how to take children on an adventure of sounds and spelling choices. WOW – I am so inspired to get into my class and THRASS my pupils. Your course and resources are a gift to English teachers. Where have you been for the last 20 years? Thank you for sharing your time, energy and enthusiasm with us.

As a senior phase teacher I have previously seen phonics as been dealt with by the junior primary. Boy was I wrong! I now have the tools to make a difference in the child’s life – no matter what the age. Thank you.

Alan thank you very much, this was fantastic, as a Setswana language teacher I am going to do my best to link English with my language. Thank you for sharing your precious time to come to Africa to give us the light.

Clear well articulated presentation - humorous. Good use of displays and resources. Questions dealt with on hand with good clear answers. Very convincing, empowering and hands on.

Thank you for the most informative, eye-opening workshop. We were blind now we can see. We are able to teach with confidence. You are a dynamic speaker and I am converted. Look forward to reading all materials.

Exhilarating. Thank goodness there is now a programme that can replace ‘Old Phonics’. THRASS has shown that opportunity exists for children to be exposed to a wider base of phonics rather than only being taught what schools perceive as ‘allowable’. Children can now fly. An exciting challenge.

I really enjoyed your presentation. The enthusiasm was contagious I can’t wait to do the rap in music, the children will love it. For personal use with my own child it will also be great from a very young age.

I thought the course was very interesting and answered a lot of my questions and those of the children in my class. The subject matter is logical and I would not have any problems in using this within my class and at home with my own children.

I thought it was very interesting. Some new and very logical ideas were presented. Alan, you were energetic, enthusiastic and animated. You came across very convincingly. I am ‘sold’ on the programme and hope that we embrace it fully. Best wishes for your future and your quest to ‘change the world’. Well done indeed. God bless you.

Lots of information in a short period of time. Needed more time. The concept makes sense. Well presented. Thank you.

I found this course insightful and liberating. Teachers, the world over, have always struggled to answer many of the children’s questions on ‘sounds’. We will no longer have to say ‘wait till later - you will be taught this in Standard 2 or 3’. I will be using this at home with my own children.

An eye opener! I have always wondered how teachers in the early stages managed to get children spelling and reading! Using the old approach is ridiculous. The THRASS way makes sense and will make a difference to how I think about this area of teaching. This will make me a better teacher.

I found the course interesting as I have some children in my class that know their phonemes but struggle to use the correct graphemes. I did not know how to help them, but I now know how to help them by using the THRASS picturechart.

I have a better understanding of why some pupils spell the way they do and I now feel that I can help them because I have a better understanding of phonics. This has been a fantastic course because the teaching of spelling is going to be more fun to teach. I also realise that I have a lot more reading to do and I look forward to this. Thank you for a fantastic course.

In my training during this course, I was highly impressed and was enhanced by discovering a great deal of what I was not aware of, with regards to the spelling of words and the pronunciation of English words. I am really grateful of this opportunity.

A valuable course! I learnt so much! I really enjoyed the part about the sounds and would have liked more on that. Time flew as the course was very interesting and entertainingly presented. Thank you for travelling so far to share this valuable, wealth of information. It’s very much appreciated.

Invigorating – want some more please! Advanced course please. Felt that I needed more time. Maybe more focused on field or for others, e.g. Reception their “age” group/teaching level. Thank you for coming.

I am very pleased in the way you enlightened me concerning the teaching of spelling as a whole. I am sure this will help me in drawing my own spelling table although it will differ greatly because of sound differences. On the whole I am very grateful for your great skills and how you imparted this to us. Thank you.

What an absolute pleasure! I was never comfortable with other phonics programmes, as I felt there are many flaws with the approaches. Hats off to you Alan for designing such a valuable course, which will be an asset to the school and the children. Thanks for coming and for making the course practical and interesting. We now have a program, which we all as teachers can embrace and be proud of. We have been truly empowered.

Well presented – now we need more! Resources good and clear with lots of child appeal. Ties in with school policies. Session with children was so valuable and gave good insight to how to use THRASS in the class.

Thoroughly enjoyed it all - well presented. It all made a lot of sense. I am looking forward to implementing THRASS in school. Only criticism rather rushed at the end, would have like a little more guidance then. Thank you, Alan.

I’ve been enlightened! Can’t wait to get into it. My first pupil will be my own child who has great difficulty reading and spelling. I am going to be a better teacher. Many thanks for a wonderful course – I will be spreading the news to colleagues in South Africa.

At last I’ve encountered an English programme that makes so much sense and is very exciting (for teachers and pupils alike). It has obviously taken much study, observation, and deliberation to have created a clear Mind Map’ which I am confident will improve our teaching of English in school. Without any reservation, I hope to implement THRASS successfully. Thank you for your passion and insight.

Alan, as a presenter you are enthusiastic, lively and an inspiration. You have great voice control that is pleasing to the ear. I liked the variety of audio-visual aids that were used, namely tapes and tv/video. The worksheets and booklets are a wealth of information. The content was informative and the knowledge was imparted at a good pace. Your planning is impeccable. You knew your content, and what fun we had learning. I walk away a richer and more knowledgeable person, and know that I can make a difference in the children’s lives. I love the new learning curve I’ve embarked on. The children and I are going to have so much fun learning, thank you.

Thank you Alan for lighting the way for all of us. More especially for all the children in our care and in our future. The time was too short – the step great.
