Enjoyed the course. Found it to be comprehensive
and well researched. Logical, repetitive and fun.
Very interesting and an eye-opener. A very logical way to teach the phonic
sounds and alphabet letters to children. Good support material to go with the
course. Enjoyable and informative.
A logical, incredibly well thought out and processed system – one that can be
utilised for both the slower learner as well as the brighter child. I look
forward to wonderful creative writing without fear of being proved incorrect.
A most enlightening and interesting course so well presented by Laola. I am very
excited for my own child to be starting this programme.
A well presented course. The THRASS handwriting, reading, spelling method most
certainly makes sense! With this method using charts, the children are going to
have a reference and tools to work with. They will definitely enjoy the rap!
Laola is very motivated and informative – her passion for THRASS really rubs off
on those whom she is lecturing. A very informative course and once we do this in
the classroom (with more knowledge about THRASS), I’m sure it is going to be a
very beneficial way of teaching the children.
I found the course very valuable. Our school has been doing THRASS since January
– nice to finally have a concrete understanding of the programme. I have seen it
work in a school and classroom and feel that I am now more equipped to teach it.
I have found this course valuable because although I had come across THRASS
before, this course made me feel more capable of implementing it in my own
class.
Useful, new approach. Battled in some areas with regard to applying THRASS to
therapy situations.
This was a good, but very intense 2 day course. I feel I would personally need
further reading to get more understanding with the programme before being
confident enough to implement it into my classroom. It would have been nice to
see it applied in a classroom.
I have enjoyed the course and have gained new ways on how to approach spelling,
reading and writing. The resources will enable me to obtain better results. I
find it very interesting and exciting.
From these two days and previous exposure to THRASS I can see how valuable it
is. The change and input that it will involve is a little mind blowing, as are
most things that involve change and totally different approach. Our children are
going to benefit from this and so are we. The THRASS material all looks great
and very user friendly.
Very interesting – something totally new for me as I am not junior primary
trained. Loads of questions I would like to ask. Quite clearly, a great deal of
thought has gone into this.
Having taught for 29 years (5 years in Britain) I am amazed that there are
actually 44 phonemes! Although rather a crash course, I feel I really benefited
from attending. I have learnt a great deal, and although challenging for me, I
shall certainly be adopting this methodology in January 2007. It will take me a
while to build up resources.
Very informative! Really had to re-think my training and teaching! I can
honestly say that I will never show a single letter to my class again and say
that it only says ‘a’! I see the reasoning in teaching children letter names in
Grade 0 and not only the sounds they make and in producing all the options that
make that sound. I explained it to my very non-teaching husband and his comment
was “Well that finally makes sense!”.
Very interesting – would be easier to understand how to implement THRASS if we
could have watched some learners being taught. Perhaps even more videos of
lessons would have helped. I look forward to learning more!
I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It was extremely well presented, very clear
and concise. The system of teaching phonemes/graphemes really makes sense to me
as opposed to “one letter, one sound”. It would obviously require a huge policy
shift as it would need to be implemented as a “whole school” exercise and I’m
not sure if the costs of importing resources would be prohibitive.
A very exciting concept … I hope it can be implemented at our school and I look
forward to seeing the results of our future learners. I am delighted to finally
come across a programme that incorporates our visual, auditory and kinaesthetic
learners in a holistic approach. Now I’m off to inspire and fund-raise!
An interesting approach to phonics and reading. I have enjoyed the course and am
grateful to have been exposed to a new method in this area. However, there are
still some areas I’m not sure of and wish there had been more time for
questions.
Very informative and interesting. Different focus on teaching spelling and
reading. Very holistic approach. Feel the need to observe it in action to see
exactly how it works. Some great ideas to think about and try out.
This is the first time I have seen or heard a THRASS presentation. I enjoyed
hearing more about THRASS and feel it will be of great benefit to use, but would
need to see it being used in a classroom situation. Thank you Laola for your
enthusiasm.
Really like teaching sounds in groups – gives children a choice without having
to simply tell them they have spelt the word incorrectly. Was hoping (naively)
that all words would fit somewhere – sadly English is difficult and there will
always be NPS words. I know my brighter girls would love this. At this stage, I
have reservations as to how the weaker girls would find their way around the
chart. We would have to learn together!
I have learnt a lot in the last two days. It will help me in my approach to
teaching Grade Ones. I would have liked more time to get into groups according
to the grades we teach and talk about how to start implementing THRASS in the
practical sense and have more time to discuss things to do with specific grades.
Thank you for a very informative two days.
I would like to have seen more video footage of Alan teaching groups of
children. Perhaps we could have moved through the material more quickly and had
more workshop sessions. It would have benefited us if we could have worked with
the resources – e.g. Magnetic graphemes, computer exercises, 380 Big Book. I
think that THRASS is a fantastic system of learning and I am looking to
implementing all the GREAT ideas.
Very useful and interesting.
A very well thought out spelling system combined with reading. Teachers will
need training, but pupils will love the activity involved in the programme.
Content was well covered. Seems to be useful for analysis and synthesis of
words/phonemes. THRASS seems to be a fantastic tool. However, the content could
have been delivered within a day. Also repetition can be avoided – e.g. one
example for each item is fine and irrelevant info given. Thank you for the
training.
A good concept. Would prefer to see small intimate groups going the course
“hands on” over 1 day. Very tedious sitting for long periods of time – Try to
make more interactive.
I found the course interesting at times, but felt a bit overwhelmed. Maybe the
course can be held over 3 days. Very interesting ways of doing the work. I would
enjoy going to follow-up courses to see it implemented in the class situation.
Well done for coming up with this exciting concept!
Very informative, but it is a lot of information to absorb over a two day
period. Given me a lot of food for thought!
I believe the concept is brilliant, however, I do think that the course needn’t
take 2 days. As teachers we do understand many of the fundamental aspects. There
was too much repetition and unnecessary information and at times people’s
opinions were not considered. Thanks for the insight.
A most worthwhile and enlightening two days. It has been most helpful sorting
out queries regarding reading, writing and spelling. It looks as though it would
be most useful to bring the whole school on board and streamline the literacy
policy. An interesting time so dynamically handled.
I think a video to start the programme would have captured the audience. Some
sessions were very long winded and the delegates felt very much like Grade 1
pupils. Perhaps too much explanation for well trained teachers. Felt it could
have been achieved in one day. The programme sounds very exciting and I am
excited about starting THRASS into my daily routine.
This is a unique and functional methodology to teach handwriting, reading and
spelling. The presentation, however, appeared redundant at times – less
explanation would be sufficient as a lot of the material is easily understood.
Thank you for bringing THRASS to South Africa.
The concept of THRASS is excellent and makes common sense! I felt it was a
little too repetitive at times… could it have been done in one day? I would have
liked to see more of the available video footage. I enjoyed the analysis section
as we were engrossed with the actual workings of the programme. I am looking
forward to implementing it in my classroom on Monday.
I loved the idea that each letter can make different sounds. I think is is very
exciting and definitely the way to go. Will, however, have to change mindset in
terms of old spelling rules etc. My child has been doing it at his school and
now I understand the games, etc. that he is trying to play with us!
I have found this presentation most interesting, stimulating and motivating! I
feel enthusiastic and look forward to implementing it. I could do with more
information and interaction with other teachers in order to become more
confident and competent. Thank you for a fabulous 2 days.
An inspirational spelling, reading and writing scheme. The variation and thought
given to this scheme will certainly be embraced with much enthusiasm by all
learners exposed to it. It will be a major learning curve to all educators who
use it while becoming familiar with the material.
Excellent course! Dynamic presenter with passion for THRASS.
