GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS ACCREDITED CERTIFICATE, WESTERN CAPE, SA, OCT 8-9, 2007

Portable Document Format

This has been an excellent course. Laola is an exceptional trainer, making the course both exciting and practical. I cannot wait to put what I learned into practice. Looking back, there is so much I thought I knew, but admitting learning I was wrong was never so enjoyable.

A very worthwhile learning experience and a great learning tool for teaching future learners. I learnt a lot on this course and this information will be treasured. Thank you for exposing us to this course.

I have been so enriched by this course! The presentation, itself, was brought with much enthusiasm which really made THRASS exciting and I can really see how it would work. I wish we had learnt about this approach sooner, as I feel I have to re-train my thinking towards handwriting, reading and spelling, but I do believe it is a worthwhile change because of the potential for success that it produces. I really like the fact that THRASS is so holistic and caters for all the learning styles.

Very helpful to me, especially in developing my language as a second language English speaker. If I have to give a percentage, I would give 100%.

Very beneficial and life changing. All the resources and ideas are amazing. I wish that I was taught this method at school – it would have made my life so much easier. I’m looking forward to teaching this when I’m qualified. Laola is an amazing teacher. She made things so easy to understand. Thank you so much for benefiting us with this course.

This was such an eye-opening experience into the world of teaching literacy on a new and advanced level. This THRASS experience will make such a difference in teaching others. What is more important, it can be used in different languages to teach others English on a more sound based level. I enjoyed the course greatly and will use it to my best ability. It is so effective.

I think this is a brilliant course. I learnt so much about how a sound can make such a massive difference in a language. I found it really interesting to see how the rap is used. It’s a fun and interactive way of learning the English language. The materials that we use are excellent. I can definitely see myself using this programme in the future.

I found the THRASS course very interesting and very informative. It will be of great value when I get to use it in my classroom. I think that if every school had to use this, then South Africa will be a better place for all, in terms of being literate and speaking properly.

Very interesting, as I have learnt such a lot about different ways to pronounce a certain word. It has been a highly effective course and it has been great being part of the workshop. It will definitely grow on me and as an educator, I will implement it!

Very interesting and think that it could be an advantage to ALL future CPUT Education students to have this as part of their Literacy training – perhaps more in depth than just a two day course. I think that all the resources are brilliant, especially the computer programmes, as we are moving into a more digital age. Thank you very much for teaching us about this way of teaching. I think that it was presented in an exciting way and that we have all learnt something.

Very useful. The resources are user-friendly and I am sure I will be able to use them effectively in my classroom. Using THRASS, the learner and even I, will become more confident and at ease when struggling to spell or read. Really enriched me with life-long word solving skills. I really enjoyed it.

This course has helped me in so many ways to improve the learners’ reading problems. It is very well organised. I will certainly take this with me to school one day.

Very interesting – the reason is that I really learnt a lot. If it wasn’t for you, I would be in a dark tunnel now because I wasn’t really aware of these things – for instance, on teaching practice, when I gave a learner some work and they spelt a word wrong, I never looked at the phoneme – I just marked them wrong. Now I really learned a lot over these two days. Thank you for everything.

Very helpful and very well organised. It helps us to stop thinking in isolation, but holistically. It’s not just helpful to the learners, but I believe every teacher can and will also learn something from it.

I’ve learned the importance of English as a language - the difference between graphemes and phonemes and gained knowledge on how you can teach learners to break down words, how to make sounds in order for them to write words down easily. I think that this programme will help a lot of learners who are struggling with reading and writing, especially those who are taking English as a second language. This is a skill that I’ll use in my classroom and try by all means to have good results. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience.

This was definitely something very different and also interesting to learn. It’s a very good way to teach. I think I will definitely use the programme if I am able to at the school I go to. I feel that even if THRASS isn’t available at the school I go to, I can still use the idea of teaching and the chart. I think it’s a very good idea and has helped me understand how to teach reading and spelling.

I thought that the spelling methodology was extremely helpful. I think it’s important to recognise how children spell words correctly. I think the cards with pictures will be extremely useful in class.

Good and interesting. It was a lot of fun. The presenter was brilliant. I enjoyed getting the goods which we got, as I can use it again and tell other people about THRASS.

Very interesting. I learned a lot and saw things in a way I have never seen before. This information should be valuable at some point in my career. Presenter well prepared.

This THRASS 2-day workshop has been a very enriching learning experience for me. It has been so useful for me to make meaning of the phonemes-graphemes and understand how we integrate this programme into all other learning areas. I feel that I would like to use and implement THRASS in my classroom one day because I feel that it is rich and so well thought out and organised. I wish that more schools would introduce THRASS into their curriculum because it is a useful tool that cannot be wasted. The course is so well designed and it was very interesting, informative and fun.

THRASS has taught me new ways to teach writing, reading, as well as spelling. This will be relevant in our teaching in the future, especially if THRASS will be implemented in schools. The lecturer brought everything across well, so that we could understand. The rap was especially fun and interesting. The learners will certainly enjoy that!

The course was interesting and meaningful. This technique can improve spelling, reading and writing on a big scale if it is implemented right. Attending this course will truly help me in my teaching. The resources are excellent. Attending this course was a big benefit to me.

Thanks for such a valuable workshop.

Very interesting. It was interesting to find out different options for teaching children to read, write and speak. Our lecturer made the course very interesting. Thank you for the two days.

This 2-day course means a lot to me because I learned a lot about phonics and letter formation and the sounds. She tried to explain all the stages slowly so as to give us opportunities to watch from video and to ask some questions. She also advised me on how I can apply this information to the learners through giving and showing a lot of activities.

Extremely enriching because of my choice to be a language teacher. I enjoyed the course - however, I would have liked the university to do it over a longer period because it was too much information to absorb. Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Very useful in the classroom. It is also very enjoyable – Just a bit too much information at once.

Very useful. I will try my best to convince schools to invest in the THRASS course.

Very interesting – might not be able to use in my classroom teaching Gr.7-9, yet could be great to have this knowledge being around many 2-5 year olds in my family.

I enjoyed this experience so much and I have learnt more than what I have in the 14 years that I have spent at school. The THRASS programme proves to be very effective, which has provided me with more knowledge skills and understanding – which it should in the school with younger learners. It definitely is a fun way of learning languages. Thank you for everything!

This course was informative and enlightening. It is interesting to know that there are a variety of literacy programmes and approaches to teaching reading, writing and spelling.

Helpful and gave me insight to a new way of teaching phonemes and graphemes. It also helped me understand it so that I can teach it to the best of my ability. It also helped me understand why they form the letters with ‘tails’. It was a course worthwhile taking. I look forward to using THRASS.

I’ve learnt a lot from THRASS, especially, the graphemes – graph, digraph, trigraph. Made me realise many mistakes I was making when I use English, as it is my second language. I think going to schools with this information and skills can make the difference to those learners, more especially in language. Knowing the difference between consonants and vowels and blending was meaningful.

Extremely informative. It will help me a great deal knowing that I am going to specialise in the English language. I feel that there had to be an extended duration period on this course because there’s so much information being crammed into a period of two days.

Great! I really learnt a lot but should be longer - 3 days? The use of a Smart Board would really have made the lessons powerful. Thanks for all the hard work put in and for the great resources!

The materials and philosophy seems hands on and very communicative, which is good. Too much information for just two days. The approach to teaching children using THRASS will definitely improve standards if it is used more in our curriculum.

I think I’ve learnt a lot. This was meaningful to me as I’m a second language English speaker. Now I have the passion that at least when I’m in front of my own class, they will gain something from me, as I did grasp some information. This lady is an expert. She explains everything thoroughly and she is eager to get everyone on track. Thanks for everything. THRASS really opened the door that was locked to me – especially when pronouncing words, it was a problem because my accent is not good. Now I know how to pronounce each and every consonant and vowel sound.

This course has really shown me a new dimension for teaching the English language, whether it be as a first or second language. It has broadened my knowledge to some extent as to the semantics in the language for laying a solid foundation for communication in the English language.

Very innovative and useful. Thanks for the resources. Set-up and presented extremely well. You know your product.

This course has made me more aware of spelling and reading and why we need to use pictures, locate and look at letter formation and letter location in order for better reading, spelling and writing skills. I now understand the true meaning of phonemes and graphemes. The materials and style of this course was logical and worth all the time. I’ve also learnt that we need to be accountable for the reading, spelling and speaking skills of children. Teaching for meaning, modelling work, referring to the phoneme and grapheme charts for effective literacy skills.

I’ve learned a lot. The course was good in empowering skills in teaching language. It helped me to see things with a broader picture because spelling and pronunciation was a problem for me. I now feel more confident in reading and writing in English. It will also make a difference in schools.

Extremely informative but too many hours in a day. If the course should be divided into 3 days, I feel perhaps I would have concentrated better. The course should be introduced to all schools and will work in schools which have the proper running resources. There was too much information to be digested in the time given, which makes it less effective to follow. Nevertheless I enjoyed it.

Ideal for future teachers as it provided many different techniques of teaching learners to read and write. These skills are of utmost importance as it will be needed for life. It was a privilege to be part of this learning experience and I hope this course will be provided to future students as well. It should be part of professional studies, but over a longer period of time. Thank you THRASS!

A very interesting and informative course that will hold me in good stead in my teaching career. I do feel that it was a vast amount to take in over two days and therefore found it a little confusing at times. Thank you for a valuable course.

I have found this course very interesting and exciting. However, I do have reservations on how it’s going to work in South Africa. I feel you, as an individual, can’t come into a school and teach THRASS – the school has to be doing it. The font also worries me, especially the lower case k. I feel if I am in the right school which implements THRASS, I will be on board to teach it as well.

This course will help equip us for the new literacy programme. Most schools don’t know of or even use this programme. Too much information crammed into 2 days – could have been a week course with more practical hands-on experience.

Well organised, with very creative, new styles for teaching learners phonics and how to deal with them with their different learning styles. The yellow chart is very useful for me and also for the children. I like the rhythm of the raps with the music.

Very interesting – learnt a lot. I would love to use this in the classroom, but I do feel you need more than two days. It would be great to do more hands-on things for us to become more confident in teaching this method.

Really interesting. I learned a lot and different ways of teaching. I enjoyed the course.

Very interesting and fun. The resources we were given are amazing and easy to use. Laola is excellent in getting the message across. I learnt a lot. Can’t wait to put my knowledge into action.

Being able to experience what the THRASS course is about, was an overwhelming experience. I have learnt a lot and had questions answered that I used to ask. THRASS makes much more sense to me when working with putting vowels and consonants into ‘sound’ places. This method cuts away the nerve wrecking moments when having to explain why ‘igh’ in light is I. One just basically has to place them into the house in which they sound the same. I am glad that we have found something to make the teaching of the English language less complicated.

I really enjoyed attending this course. I found it to be interesting and extremely beneficial. I am grateful for the resources which I have been given and I can’t wait to implement THRASS in my own classroom. Thank you for taking the time to teach us about THRASS and all it entails.

This has been a great learning experience. I am much more aware now on how to pronounce the various letters, in a fun way that you can teach learners. I am sure I will also feel much more comfortable now on how to teach phonics, especially as English is not my mother language. I was always dreading teaching phonics, but because you can teach it in such a fun way and I can now feel more at ease. A great experience. This opening doors for us. Thank you Laola.

Very innovative and diverse. I don’t think that it will work in all situations and circumstances. The software is amazing and would be so effective. The resources are also amazing – would love to use them in my classroom.

A fascinating course and I have enjoyed it. The facilitator displayed enthusiasm for what she was doing and yet made me feel comfortable, more enthusiastic and passionate about my career. I have gained a lot of knowledge and information which initially I was unaware of. I have found THRASS a precise tool and system for education.

Very interesting – especially on the first day. I did find some of the content repetitive and boring. I feel the sessions of each day were too long. The workshop should have been 3-4 days. With some of the content, I was a little confused.

I have truly learned so much during these two days! I can only imagine that this method will make a great difference to the learners after my terrible experience of having to teach “fairy e” when the learners started asking about the ‘silent e’. I am excited to implement this programme in my class one day. Our presenter kept the course exciting with her great energy and passion for her job. Thank you for this learning experience.

Very interesting. I think that it has a lot of potential. I learnt a lot. I think it is very important for the children to notice that the same letter can have many different sounds. I can see this helping children to learn how to read, spell and write. I can’t wait to try this in my class one day.

I feel that the course was and is a great programme. There is good interaction with the learners. It helps with the literacy progress and doesn’t affect the normal school set-up. It is a life-long  life skill. The way it is divided up makes sense and it interesting and can be adapted to all learners in all age groups. I enjoyed and learnt a lot. It was a great experience.

Mind blowing! I look forward to applying it in the class and seeing the difference and wherever I am placed – if they aren’t already involved with THRASS, I will show them THRASS and bring it into the system. It makes sense and Mr Davies has done phenomenal work. I can see that years of research has resulted in an excellent programme.

A very interesting and worthwhile experience. It has made much more sense this way to teach English and phonics and the way the learners move through the grades, expanding on all the skills. Laola was very informative, energetic and a great trainer to have. She has certainly opened many doors to the way I feel I would want to teach literacy in the future. Thank you Laola for a great experience for a better literacy teaching opportunity.

Very beneficial. It brought a completely new way of looking at reading and writing. The course was presented comprehensibly and dynamically.

Visuals that the speaker used were nice, however, we did not have it to have better interaction with her. The resources we received will not be useful because it’s too small. It would not work in disadvantage schools in the Western Cape.

This has given me a much clearer understanding of how a child’s mind works where phonics, spelling, reading and handwriting is concerned. This method of teaching, I am quite sure, will be a beneficial factor in the classroom. I have learnt so much and will find it a challenge to put it to practise. The lecturer was wonderful and really brought the message across in a fun, loving way.

I really enjoyed the course. There was so much to learn! I love the resources that we were so kindly given. This is wonderful teaching programme. Thank you for your time, resources and effort. I look forward to teaching in this way in the future.

This was an informative course. I must mention that the downside of this course is the fact that all the resources are not included. I understand that the resources are expensive to produce, but we cannot use the Essential Guide without the other resources.

The course allowed us as future educators to view language, reading and spelling in different ways which will allow us to help learners. The fact that we had visual and auditory demonstrations was good. The fact that we had to do the activities, like learners, was good – to have more hands on for students whilst the workshop was going. Preparation was good, as well as resources.

Laola has been very informative, clear and helpful. She is knowledgeable on the subject and could answer any of our questions with ease. This is a very impressive and appealing approach to reading and spelling and I do hope that I can teach this in my future classroom.

This method of teaching literacy has greatly increased my knowledge and opened my mind up to a logical and meaningful way of how to help learners in this learning area. Over these two days, I have learnt how to explain and teach the things in literacy like the ‘magic e’ to learners in a way that makes sense. Overall, it was an informative and well explained programme. Thank you for this tool.

I think that the two day course was very valuable for my future teaching. THRASS is a very good concept and makes a lot of sense – very good for literacy teaching. It is fantastic and as aid more than once when people were talking about THRASS – “It is a mind blowing experience.” Thank you very much for the time given to us. We learned a great deal in two days.

Through THRASS, learners are able to learn valuable reading, writing, spelling, synthesizing skills and many more – the list goes on. THRASS is about making sense and I am very keen on making all experiences for the learner meaningful to help them to develop holistically and to promote life long learning. I do like the way handwriting is done in THRASS because from the beginning, the learners are being prepared for cursive handwriting which they will later be expected to do. I love the Phoneme Machine and all the resources.

Very, very interesting. I believe I have learnt a lot from this course and found it was very beneficial.

Very interesting and I learnt a lot from it. It was presented very clearly and in a fun way. Good use of examples and the content was planned and presented in a way that was easy for everyone to understand. I feel that, although THRASS material is quite a big investment, it is a very relevant and valuable way of teaching children how to read, spell and form words.

The course was excellent, presented brilliantly. The presenter was very knowledgeable about the subject. How wonderful – we learnt a vast number of spelling techniques – however, this could have been done as group work where students could interact with one another as learners. The course is very good – thought it could be presented over a longer period so that we may do some revision on what we didn’t follow so well in the presentation. Millions of thanks.

Very useful and interesting for Foundation Phase teachers. Using the THRASS method for teaching literacy would be a good way. It is interesting to see all the different methods of teaching literacy. This will help me in the future when teaching in my own class. This course was successful.

Very interesting. By using this method of teaching with children, it will be a lot easier for them to understand and remember how to read, write, say and spell words. I am eager to see how the children relate to this method in class. I really enjoyed the first day, but found the second day rather drawn out, but it was still beneficial. I really appreciate you taking time to come to our university.

Highly enjoyable. A lot of knowledge to take in – perhaps the course could be over a longer time instead of two days. Could use a layout to provide the students a chance to see where she is during the lecture. Other than that, an excellent lecturer – vibrant and funny.

Very informative and interesting but could have been condensed into one day, as many things were repeated. It is a good eye-opening course for all teachers to attend, however, many things can’t be used in the foundation phase. Maybe have 1 day for foundation phase and 1 day for intermediate senior phase. Well presented and the presenter was very enthusiastic, which made it interesting.

Very interesting, as well as useful in teaching. What worries me though, is the other resources needed as it would definitely be very difficult to teach without all those resources. Other than that, I loved the relevance of this two day course.

Very interesting. I can see that children would enjoy this much more than the traditional way of teaching literacy. It should be introduced from the beginning of their schooling, but how do you undo the things that the children in the higher standards have learnt? Well done. Very informative.

Enjoyable. It really challenged me on how to teach phonics. I do honestly think all the terminology might be a bit difficult for the children, but the practical is good. I think it’s good to know that a sound can be represented by different letters and I really like the charts. I think this would be a great programme to use in the schools and I have definitely learnt a lot in these two days!

I really enjoyed this course. It has been really informative and I have learned a lot. The resources are really attractive and user-friendly.

I think that this work was very beneficial for me, as the schools I have been to show signs of problems with articulation of words. I would have liked to see a little more practical work, but understandable, as we are a big group. The resources we received as well as all the information, are extremely useful. Thanks a lot.

It was very different from any course I have been on. THRASS seems not to interfere with the curriculum. It’s an addition which would be a good thing to start in schools. However, the course was very crammed.

Very enriching. I look forward to using and teaching THRASS in the following year.

I learnt so much. I really enjoyed learning about THRASS. It really has opened my eyes. I will use it in my class. I believe this will help learners to learn better and easier and that this is very valuable for a teacher to use in her classroom.

I found this course very valuable in literacy teaching and think it will be very effective in my teaching. It is very good in helping learners with spelling words and understanding why and which words are spelt the way they are. It is a very visual and auditory course, which is important in helping learners to remember and learn how to read and spell certain words.

A new approach to teaching phonics. The THRASS method puts the words in context and has more meaning. It will improve the learners’ reading, spelling and synthesizing skills. It also helps the learners to interact and learn in a fun way by playing the games. It will definitely keep the learners engaged and will be a great asset to teachers – but more importantly, to the learners. Thanks!

Extremely valuable and very interesting and I feel I will benefit immensely from it. I know a lot more now than I did and feel that the learners we teach will understand and learn more. The speaker, Laola, was great. She taught us very well. Thank you for the opportunity and the knowledge.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course and can not wait to use this method when teaching! Laola really explained the concept and course material very well. I also am very excited to teach in a THRASS environment next year! It was a pity that it was such a big group, as at times it was a bit noisy, but Laola has a great voice and kept me interested at all times.

I’ve enjoyed this course and have learnt a lot. It helped me to put things into perspective and clearer. I didn’t know what the words grapheme, graph, etc. meant, but it was made clear during the course. This is a programme that I would use in my classroom. I really enjoyed the THRASS rap – it helped me to learn the first row quickly. Thank you for the two days. It was fruitful.

Very interesting and helpful. I think THRASS is a great way to teach learners reading and spelling, as they won’t get confused with why letters make different sounds and lets them know there are different ways to spell a sound. The course was well presented.

Very informative and useful. I have learnt new ways of learning to read, spell and write more exciting and interesting for foundation stage learners. I think this is a brilliant method and I would like to try and use it with my learners someday.

This was a very interesting approach to teaching literacy. My personal view on teaching the sounds is doing it the old way and then using your THRASS approach of teaching the various forms of finding the sound (e.g. a;a-e;ai;ay) The resources are very good and clear and to the point. But I am open to new learning styles and definitely excited to apply what I’ve learnt. The presenter knows exactly what is needed and more.

Very important for foundation phase students, but I believe that we, in the intermediate phase can use it for learners in our class who are still struggling with reading and pronunciation.

Really great. It fascinated me the way you can teach English and make learners active participants within the classroom. It’s totally awesome.

Very interesting and good. There was a lot of learning going on. I’ve learnt a lot – the most important thing being how to spell vowel sounds in English. I only knew the Xhosa vowels. The phonemes are so interesting. I would like to thank THRASS for good resource materials and charts.

Very informative and interesting. I found the way they taught us to help the children interesting and intriguing. I liked the way the course is accompanied by resources, as these are so beneficial. I especially like the computer programme that has more than one language. This helpful to teachers who often do not feel fully equipped in other languages. I feel that I have acquired enough skills in order to go and teach using the THRASS method and feel excited to learn more as I teach.

Very informative. As a teacher, it will help me with learners in the higher grades, who are still struggling. Every aspect of THRASS was thoroughly explained, as well as how we can use the different materials. It has also given me the tools and methods I will implement in my classroom.

An excellent course and I totally enjoyed it. This is definitely something that I would like to take with me when I start to teach. The only problem I had was that there was not much we did, but listen. It would have been much more exciting if we had been more involved. Overall impression – excellent.

An eye-opener. Definitely puts things into context and we, as teachers, would be able to answer all those difficult questions asked by learners. A lot of things have become much clearer to me now. Would definitely recommend this course to others.

A well organised course. The resources are very useful. Please let the students get involved because the hands-on activity keeps students alive and busy so that you don’t fall asleep.

This course will surely enhance my teaching skills. The presenter was able to teach far more than a hundred students. Sessions are actually too long. Concentration levels are more positive for the first half hour. Resources are simple to use and it will benefit the future learning. Any standard language is based on a certain paradigm.

A good course. I learnt a lot and enjoyed it, but it was a bit tiring at times because the course was condensed into two days.

Very interesting and can see the benefit of THRASS. I do, however, have reservations about how this programme will be used in South Africa. The font is not recognised by WCED, and we can’t just change it. Thank you for being very helpful and informative. I have gained a great deal of knowledge and look forward to seeing it practice next year.

I really was very excited to participate. I felt the first day was very beneficial. The second day was rather long and repetitive, so I think I lost concentration. I think the idea of the course is great, but can be a bit confusing. Laola was a great speaker – very informative and enthusiastic.

The point I truly like about THRASS is the fact that different languages can be adapted to the same phonemes and can adapt to everyone in the class, no matter what accent. It took a while to truly understand the reasoning behind THRASS and only on the second day, I understood. This is a different fun way to learn the phonemes.

Useful for foundation phase educators. I do find that schools have their own literacy methods and it will be hard to implement in the schools. THRASS is very useful to me and I found it very interesting. Good opportunity for educators to use literacy thoroughly.

Fun, helpful and I am looking forward to teaching THRASS in the schools in South Africa. Laola taught us well and she speaks clearly so that all students can understand. I think the two day course should be a week long so that we could have practically played the games and done the activities.

I definitely think the idea of THRASS is a great idea to teach learners the English language, however, I do feel that the course was too long and many people started to lose concentration. The presenter of the course did a good job educating us about THRASS.

Very interesting and informative. Materials will be put to great use. I think that the course was a little too crammed. Would be better if spread out over more days for shorter periods at a time. A lot to digest in a short time.

I think the whole course was wonderful and brilliantly presented. The only problem I had was time and the fact that I am Afrikaans first language. Despite this, I’ve learned a whole lot of new terminology. I feel confident in myself to be able to go ahead and teach THRASS in the schools. I have to admit some of the teaching materials need to be improvised as some of the schools cannot afford them or have no computers.

I found it a lot to take in, in two days, but I definitely learnt a lot. It would have been easier to learn if we had been more active during the process or maybe more questions to answer on each of the stages. Not a test. I think the handwriting issue is difficult, especially the k’s. I don’t think schools would allow a change in handwriting, which will make it difficult when teaching THRASS. I can definitely see how it will benefit the learners and am looking forward to teaching it.

Interesting. The chart helps to know how to say the sounds in different words. It is difficult to know how to say the j;g;ge;dge – good explanation. This course could be a bit more interactive. The two days are auditory and visual but not really kinaesthetic learning. If this was possible in a workshop, it would be good. Thank you for the presentation.

Talking about letter formation, picture location, letter location, phoneme location, keyword synthesis, keygrapheme recall and keyword analysis and also end-up with THRASS 500 tests. We also went through vowels and consonant that stand for certain pictures for example b-for bird and bb- for rabbit. Picture goes together with some vowels and consonant to make sound.

Course needs to be condensed – needs to be spread out a little. Otherwise informative.

The concept is a good one, although I did feel that this was more of a promotional presentation of the THRASS method and products – not really an introduction on how I can help learners that have been pushed through the foundation phase into my grades. I would use only sections and certain concepts with my own children. This course didn’t need to be so long, that there was too much repetition i.e. time killers. A lot of the course was a bit irrelevant for me. Too much rote-learning. I agree with the incorporating of all skills, but unfortunately I did find the course a bit boring.

Extremely informative. It would be nice to know that all schools equip their teachers with this programme. I think that everybody found the course enlightening. I learnt so much during this time, many things that as educators, we should be aware of, but unfortunately are not. Everything was very exciting and interactive and I enjoyed the course!

This was a one in a million experience. I am very thankful to be given the opportunity to experience and learn this method of teaching and learning. This really stimulated my thinking and reasoning and I’ve learnt more than I expected. The facilitator was brilliant and she couldn’t be more spot-on. Thanks for a great experience.

The whole methodology of language teaching is so comprehensive and holistic, such that it does not only cover languages by cross referencing, but goes beyond and across the curriculum. It’s a programme which is relevant and my wish is that the Education Department will adopt it as it will be beneficial to the students at all levels of learning.

Good – I think the students can certainly use the information. We have been spoilt with a good course and dynamic and knowledgeable presenter. Many, many thanks.

The course drew a great number of loose ends together for me. THRASS will integrate and systematise reading and spelling approaches for Intermediate Phase students in a highly effective way – Thank you! The presentation was wonderfully coherent and dynamic and the presenter was highly sensitive to the dynamics of the very large group and kept up the momentum magnificently. A tour d’force!

An incredible opportunity for us. This is a wonderful programme and there are aspects of it I cannot wait to implement and experience. It’s opened up the mind to questions which have niggled me for years. I’m glad we had this vision of what’s to come and I look forward to experiencing this in the new year. It has been a very enjoyable presentation. Pleasant and very informative. It complements the already high literacy standard found at CPUT. Thank you Laola and thank you to ABSA.
