THRASS FOLLOW-UP COURSE,
GTG, SOUTH AFRICA, JAN 31, 2009

Portable Document Format

Worth every minute. Inspiring and entertaining. A lot learnt and your enthusiasm has encouraged us to make THRASS work!

Thanks for the reminders of things we know but don’t always do. THRASS has made such a difference to the reading and spelling skills of all the children in our school.

If there is one course I’ll do on a Saturday, it is this one! I’d do it again. You’ve fired me up and I’m ready to go again!

Visually stimulating – outstanding! Application – practical! Extremely rewarding and enabling.

Clarified so many points. The profilecard and how I am to teach THRASS makes perfect sense now.

Wonderful. Worthwhile follow-up to two day. Helped refresh, consolidate 15 Mins a Day with ideas and games. I always enjoy Alan’s presentations because of his knowledge, passion and enthusiasm.

A super refresher course!

A valuable dynamic way of teaching essential skills to children. The information and aids given will be useful in any primary classroom. A method of teaching and learning that both teachers and learners will love.

Excellent refresher. Sing-A-Long excellent especially for Foundation Phase teaching. Would be wonderful if Alan could come to schools to speak to all the teachers to motivate them as much as I was motivated today. All teachers should attend refresher courses to keep up to date.

A very inspiring and stimulating presentation. Very useful information and resources. There simply is no other way to teacher our “rainbow” classes!

Very helpful – made the theory a reality and showed how to apply it in the classroom.

A practical hands on approach which should be fun to implement.

THRASS will make schools come alive, creating learners who can spell and read. I understand it much better now.

Once again Alan helps to clear the fog and help us to help children become good readers. THRASS is about changing children’s lives for the better and Alan’s commitment to this is undoubted.

A well organised presentation. Enthusiastic and energetic presentation. Encouraging for us to see what is happening in the rural areas of South Africa – empowering our teachers and children!

Great course, once again. Quite detailed recap but well needed. Very useful as it is my first year of teaching and was feeling quite overwhelmed about teaching THRASS and where to start. I now feel much more confident about where I’m starting and where I am going. I had a great time!

Very valuable. Lots of ideas. I feel encouraged and motivated to continue with THRASS. I’m going away with lots of ideas. I’m looking forward to implementing them on Monday.

Fantabulous! A great way of encouraging great ideas to implementing a super programme. My initial enthusiasm after doing the two-day has been refuelled.

A good refresher. An interesting catalyst to improve and implement a brilliant phonics programme.

Very informative. I will now be able to implement THRASS more efficiently!

Valuable and has given me several new ideas with regards to implementing THRASS in my class.

Great ideas for lessons. I’m so enthusiastic. I now understand the Profilecard much better.

A job well done. I feel more confident in using the Profilecard. I have just done my training and am still amazed at the amount of fun activities that can be taught (with spelling and phonics). I still need a lot more practice!

This has put my teaching into perspective. I feel much more confident about using THRASS daily.

It was absolutely amazing!

Great to see interactive whiteboard and how well it can be used. Great ideas for class teaching and my upcoming assembly!

I enjoyed the day and have been enthused again by the logical approach of THRASS as a phonics revolution to my teaching of literacy.

Awesome, empowering. Feeling more confident to empower others. Thanks for THRASS. It has changed lives and inspired greater expectations for all the children I teach. I have walked the talk and have repeated incredible results and, above all, a love of reading. They are thinking individuals who are not afraid to venture!

Very interesting. Well worth it!

Revolutionary. We have to spread it around – to convince some schools will be difficult, but the success of a few will surely spread.

Thank you for making me excited about THRASS again and to confirm that I am on the right track. Stunning course. Very interactive. Learnt a lot from resources, CDs and school in Mpumalange. Sing-A-Long very exciting.

Outstanding. You have encouraged me yet again to take a risk. I am going to become a bit prescriptive as of Monday! I do believe if they (teachers not yet on board)) try it the way you have revised it for me today, these negative teachers will come on board. I have loved every minute.

Thank you for your enthusiasm. The only way to do THRASS is actually to get your hands dirty and just to play and have fun with your children. The SING-A-LONG resource is brilliant!

Alan was enthusiastic and passionate. I feel inspired again and motivated to take THRASS into my classroom and make it work. A bit fast and too much info at once. A bit slower.

The course really made everything fall into place. THRASS makes more sense now.

Inspiring and motivating. Thanks to Holy Rosary for their inspiration to challenge us all to “each one teach one” and pass on what we have and have learnt. I would love to do more for our community.

Interesting. Fun. Lovely resources. Well presented. Would like to have had more information on implementing THRASS from scratch, especially when not starting THRASS in Grade 1.

Brilliant!

Stunning!

Informative. Interesting. Gave me a better understanding. Good ideas given. Insightful ideas. Well presented. Good info on resources.

Wow! Thank you so much for this wonderful day. I did your course in 2007 and really needed this follow-up course to get my THRASS teaching into gear. I can’t wait to get to school on Monday and inspire my children with THRASS. With this programme I believe I can improve my children’s spelling and reading. We are going to have so much fun and laughter. I am going to make it one of my aims to get the Foundation Phase up and running 100% with THRASS. Keep doing what you are doing, Alan. You are an inspiration.

Video clips of THRASS in action in the classroom were great. Enjoyable but would like to have learnt more as there was too much repetition of the first course. But thanks for everything you are doing.

Enjoyed the revision – recap. Re-spired me!

A great programme that really works! We have seen a great improvement in our learner’s spelling and reading skills. I enjoyed today but sometimes found it a bit difficult to follow and thought you sometimes jumped around a bit. Still loved it though and learned a lot.

A refreshing update. Good to know that I’m on the right path. Practise makes perfect.

Too much revision of previous course. Needed more time on 15 Minutes A Day book.

Wonderful to see and hear you again – you are an inspiration. Found the refresher course helpful particularly in light of new technology like interactive boards.

It is good to have a structured scheme of work. Made very easy for teacher to understand how to progress from one stage to another.

Good revision of skills learnt last year. Had expected more time on the scheme. Only implementing in our Grade this year. Feel motivated to put together scheme, including songs and phonics.

Too much revision. Would have liked some more ideas to implement. But you did inspire me again!

Very good as it helped to refresh what we learnt before. THRASS is making more sense all the time.

Start rather by telling us now the scheme works. What about workshops where we practise implementing and doing the lessons? I love all the CDs and DVDs and my pre-school child will do to!

Very good.

Great. I enjoyed the afternoon session enormously.

Very good.

Valuable follow up course. Learnt a lot.

Very valuable. I needed a recap because I needed to be reminded about certain skills. There were some good ideas that I will implement.

Much clearer. Can go further with my class. Great new ideas.

Very informative. Nice to be reminded after the two day course. God some of the help I needed to get started.

Well informed. Will make more literate learners. Enjoying THRASS!

Very motivatikng again. Videos so informative.

Excellent refresher.

Fantastic lecture. Thanks for the great ideas. We need to go back and practise the ideas and implement them in our lessons.

Very enjoyable.

Excellent course. Glad to see what I do in my class is on the right track for THRASS.

A great refresher. THRASS 15 Mins a Day a fantastic help.

THRASS will make schools come alive, creating learners who can spell and read. I understand it much better now.

I needed a starting point to teaching THRASS. I now feel more confident.

This has made me feel more confident and willing to start using THRASS in my classroom.

Fantastic. Has given clarity on where to begin when implementing THRASS. The video also gives one confidence.

Great course. Implementation is now much clearer.

Good to motivate again and consolidate.

Can this course be done more regularly?!

Please can we do this more regularly. We are only starting to really internalise all the information!

Wonderful. Gave the boost needed!

Thank you for, once again, refreshing my mind and putting me on the right track!

Your enthusiasm definitely rubs off. Wonderful ideas and I am ready to implement them!

Loved it! Thank you very much.

Excellent.

The videos were very interesting. It was nice to have a recap of the course – although it was repetitive at times.

Well done! Very informative!

Some excellent ideas in the afternoon. Has refreshed my knowledge and enthusiasm for THRASS. The morning session seemed to be an advert for selling and using all the products. This was done in the previous two-day course. Loved the use of interactive book. Would come to another one!

I have done the Sing-A-Long course, loved it, but felt the first half of today was all about that programme and selling it to us. Second half was great, learnt new ideas, more in touch with green scheme of work and how to follow it. I enjoy your product and learn more every day. [“What! I spent masses of time in the morning explaining and then encouraging everyone to identify the ten THRASS skills in the 20-minute Limpopo video! Alan]

Very good. Please give the information which is challenging (e.g. Phoneme Location) earlier in the day as we get tired later. We are sold on the system.

Alan is an excellent presenter. He delivers the course in an effective and vibrant manner and helped me to be motivated in teaching. I do belive there was a lot of advertising initially but have managed by the end of the course to go away with some valuable points to assist me in my teaching. Thank you and continue with the excellent work.

Really enjoy Alan – he is passionate and enthusiastic about THRASS. I feel that more info and direction could have been given with regards to teaching THRASS – too much revision done on what we already know. Lots of focus on the Profilecard rather than the actual teaching of THRASS. Enjoyed learning to link the different stages (skills). THRASS is fantastic!

Helpful in certain areas but as a first time THRASS teacher for Gr 1 I’m still unsure as to how to being (the very first lesson). How fast can I move along before the children are able to write their own words?

Alan was an excellent presenter. He kept us absorbed and certainly stirred up enthusiasm. I believe I am leaving with a greater understanding and with greater confidence to implement the program.

I absolutely love Alan’s enthusiasm but didn’t learn anything new. Not sure if we were meant to…. but I have been refreshed and excited to go to school on Monday and try to take some of Alan’s enthusiasm into my classroom. Really enjoyed watching the videos.

Fantastic! We are really enthusiastic about THRASS and were dancing and singing. Pupils will love it. Have learnt some more today.

Good ‘brush up’ course. Interesting to see different approached to teaching and learning THRASS. Could have been more condensed to one session of three hours. A lot of this is what we do in practice already. Course covered a lot of the basics which we are already familiar with.

Today’s course gave me the courage to teach THRASS with confidence. I will be able to move to the next level – because I’ve been dong the rap, graph, digraph and trigraph only. The scheme of work has everything.

Fabulous. I gain more and more after every course. An extreme amount of hard work is always put in. Works fantastically. Alan is so alive and makes everything sound so simple. Makes a person extremely motivated. Thanks for such a super system.

Great day. Some lovely new ideas to do and expand on. We are enjoying using THRASS in our school. We recently acquired the Sing-A-Long CD and book, the children have learnt the first two songs very quickly. Enjoying every minute. I feel better equipped to fill in the Profilecard. Will love to hear this again and again.

So relieved to see the teachers understanding their phonic and phonemic awareness better. You have done a remarkable job in doing that. It can only impact 1000 fold as it reaches children through informed thinking and teaching. You are uplifting not just communities but nations.

Clarified issues that were unclear. I am using the program with Gr 9 learners with great success. They love the songs. Many feel empowered!

Everything has become so much clearer (implementation wise)! I am convinced that there is no other programme!

A dynamic refresher after doing the course two years ago. I always learn something new and go back to school raring to go! An amazing literacy/whole language programme to which I fully aspire.

Wonderful (as usual). Very informative, filled with new ideas and encouraged enthusiasm and guidance. Thank you for the opportunity to express and teach this great programme.

A good refresher and gave more practical ideas of implementing the theory behind the programme into the classroom. I thoroughly enjoyed your passion and inspirational presentation.

Brilliant. Very informative and answered a lot of my questions. I would love to come every year for a follow-up course! I can’t wait to get back to school and introduce the Sing-A-Long CD.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Was very beneficial, especially after using THRASS in the classroom. Feel more confident on how to use resources more effectively. Am excited and more motivated to use resources and implement THRASS overall. Think it is outstanding and have found much success with the programme. It is a great system and look forward to learning more and using it effectively and more productively in the classroom! Many things were made clearer today.
