GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE,
CONWY, JAN 11 & 16, 2007

Portable Document Format

Very useful for my own skills and provided me with lots to take away to consider how this could be used within LEA. The course will support work in Welsh Medium Schools currently using THRASS. I’ve learnt two new words and can finally spell diarrhoea! Thanks Glynis.

I enjoyed the course. I found it useful and now feel better able to teach THRASS to my class. The teaching ideas were particularly useful – one more the better!
Valuable introduction to principles of THRASS, both in terms of linguistic knowledge (terminology etc) and phonic awareness. For someone who has never really been given any knowledge on how to teach or improve spelling, this was fascinating. Even without introducing a whole ‘THRASS’ scheme, there were plenty of ideas for lessons to support lower ability pupils in secondary school. Presentation was well paced and appropriate.

The course content was both informative and interesting. I am left thinking about ways in which some of the THRASS strategies can be implemented. Excellent teacher offered sound advice and practical support. Really enjoyed the course.

Really enjoyed the two days. It will be easier to assess individual children’s phonemic awareness based on the training and I will now be able to put in place fun and interesting strategies to help children learn without them becoming frustrated and bored. Super for all pupils from very able to severely SEN.

Interesting to learn new linguistic terminology and some new spelling strategies. I’m still not sure how useful the THRASS chart and the linguistic terms will be in actually improving spelling for Year 8 students, and still feel they may be confused by the difficulty and complexity of the analysis and terminology. It was helpful to be in the position of a student and understand their learning difficulties and I found the etymology interesting.

An interesting approach to understanding the variety of sounds created by letters.

It was enjoyable though some of the terminology would be difficult to introduce at KS3. Parts of the THRASS chart will be useful when looking at spelling patterns with small groups of pupils. The ideas for lessons could be implemented with certain classes.

An interesting course – Glynis knows THRASS inside out and upside down! It is something I would like to have a go at once I have got to grips with it myself. I’m not sure how successful this would be. However, in KS3 if pupils have no prior knowledge I will have a go at parts however.

Thought provoking and challenging – now I know how the pupils feel when faced with unfamiliar tasks. Glynis steered us through the maze of THRASS with a firmness that came from a thorough knowledge and genuine enthusiasm. What a shame it was only two days (can’t say that for many courses!).
