GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE,
ACCRA, GHANA, JAN  20-21, 2006

Portable Document Format

This is one of the best workshops I have ever attend. It has really taught me a lot. I have also know how to make English language teaching easy for the understanding of the children. I have gain a lot.

I really enjoyed the training session. It’s very informative and I have learned a different approach to teaching phonics and key words. The different activities, the games and the multi-sensory approach involved are really wonderful. Hilary did a great job modelling a lot of good skills, classroom best practices, and teacher pupil relationship for the participants. Great teacher. The charts are great.

A highly current and useful approach for teaching English. The link with ICT is also a step that is relevant or necessary. There is the need to spread more information about it in Ghana especially stakeholders in education.

Very useful and it is my hope that those of us who have had this training could be used as contact persons for it to reach other parts of the country. More grease to your elbow. Thank you very much.

A very professional presentation, well delivered, well structured, interesting, fun. Intensive but can be easily applied – Hands on. Hilary’s patience and stamina are admirable. Good resources, very readable and quite easy to use. It was refreshing to have been able to recall some of the linguistics that I learnt at University. I feel that I will be able to put my knowledge into better use after this programme. Definitely would like to have the Phoneme Machine.

This course has really reminded me of the phonics I have been teaching. It has given me new ideas of how to present my lessons from the Nursery to the Primary. I have learnt an easy way of teaching children who do not use English as a first language. My English lessons are now going to be more lively and will handle older children with ease. Thanks a lot to the organisers and to the school.

It was an interesting course which is beneficial to me, because I have learnt new things about handwriting, spelling and reading. And also learning in a way of playing games and fun. It has really teach me how children will learn fast using THRASS methods of the way they teach.

This course has really increase my knowledge on English, i.e. The Language (how to speak, pronounce certain words etc) how to spell and listening knowledge. The teaching was really great.

Informative and of great help. Lots of information to be shared in two days. A very enthusiastic and clear speaking presenter. She really represents how you should address the students. An incredible job to put the THRASS together! I hope that the amount you have put in this programme to design it will give us the same amount but in success and pleasure. Thanks.

It has been very useful remembering things I’d learnt already and learning more new things. It would be very helpful because I handle children who have just joined the primary section, and I have really enjoyed the easy and playful multi-sensory approach.

Very informative. It has helped me to have a better understanding of the phonics sounds, which in turn will help me to be able to have an easier approach to teaching my pupils in an exciting way.

I must first and foremost say the workshop was very successful. It is a very good method of teaching English Language and I think if such workshops are organised every year it would go a long way to making the dream of THRASS come true. Finally, I want to say I am most grateful for such opportunity.

The course is actually fantastic and every component of it was systematically dealt with. The facilitator was friendly, patient and resourceful. She took her time to explain things when questions were asked. On my part as a participant, the course has really broadened my understanding on new approaches to teaching language and literacy which I think will go a long way to help me and probably my future students. However, when organising subsequent workshops teachers in government owned schools should be invited to take part in such an important workshop. Thankyou.

Great. My instructor great and wonderful. The course has been an eye-opener and really broadened my knowledge on the teaching of English language. It was very helpful and successful. It has really started off some great urge to do more for the children in my school and its a breakthrough. It’s great!

As a secondary school English instructor I am always looking for new “tools” to use – I found this workshop quite informative, fun and interesting. I intend to use some of the strategies mentioned/modelled when teaching vocabulary, pronunciation of words and so forth (of course, w/modifications). THRASS far exceeds traditional methods of teaching spelling, word/letter choices/recall and articulation which often focussed on vote memory/repetition. THRASS is much more progressive in its approach – multi-sensory, thorough in its coverage of sounds, and much more accurate and true to the language. It was also very helpful for me to learn what PYP teachers are doing with the younger students and teaching methods for reading, writing, spelling. Hilary was an impressive trainer, with a great deal of energy, knowledge to impart, expertise and enthusiasm. Well done!

A real eye-opener or more of a life-changing event. I am so grateful and hope that our school can apply what has been learnt. I also hope that I can master it in order to teach thousands of kids.

Well presented and enthusiastic. Taught us a lot. Some cultural problems – particular words and references – e.g. to the use of a map, and how does this relate to reading schemes?

Really helpful to me. I now understand better the difference between phoneme and grapheme and can use it confidently. I can also confidently handle phonics of all aspects and explain some questions put to me by parents/carers. I would love to do this again because I fully (100%)/totally appreciate this concept of THRASS as a way of impacting knowledge to children. Thanks a lot.

Very informative. Gave good directions to manage the system for non-teachers, as well as teachers.

This training has been very helpful to me and have learnt a lot about THRASS. Thankyou.

It was very educative and interesting. The teacher was very good. I learnt so much and I hope to practise what I have learnt. All the participants were very nice and well behaved.

The THRASS programme/course has been very beneficial. It has really added knowledge and new ways of teaching reading, handwriting and spelling to my skills as teacher. It would help me have interesting lessons that would involve even the very weak children. I promise to switch the teaching of phonics from what I already knew to THRASS. I am really grateful.

An action packed, exhaustive experience. Opened a whole new aspect in learning English. It was a marathon of a course (understandably). We could have done with an extra day to have a thorough discussion among the schools represented regarding strengths to challenges. Thankyou.

An effective course with much information acquired. I hope to implement the new ideas received. The organisers are really doing a great work to raise the education standard in Ghana. Keep it up.

It is a very interesting programme providing the logical way in learning. Additions are welcome but for me nothing to be taken out of it. Also a centre should be set up to help all.

It is a nice course. It will go a long way to help the participated school. The program will in future write the wrongs of learning English right.

This method is very systematic and very efficient. This method can reach most Ghanaian children when our teaching at the training colleges are educated on it. Good work done! Bravo!

THRASS, in general, is a brilliant idea that seems to bring some sort of discipline, courtesy, respect, creativity and sanity into the educational platform or academic standards, particularly in the use of the English Language as a medium of instruction in teaching – learning activities in schools or academic institutions. It is a great achievement having THRASS with Mrs Davies in Ghana. It is my greatest wish that this course or system grows to last over years to all the parts of the world.
