An
excellent presentation/demonstration of THRASS. Particularly useful were the
games/activities. The THRASS charts are a brilliant visual resource.
Thank you for sharing your rich experience. It was fantastic. Hopefully reading
and studying the materials will help me to support the chance to be better
student. Thanks Hilary.
The course has been very rewarding. The course instructor was fabulous. I have
enjoyed the lecture and all the activities. I am ready to really have a go at
teaching THRASS in my class. The teaching materials are so helpful and will
making teaching and learning THRASS very interesting.
The course was really useful, in that it showed practical activities for
teaching the children. Presenter was engaging and willingly answered any
questions. Materials are practical.
I think that the philosophy behind the THRASS programme is wonderful, and if I
could I will want the personalities behind it be considered for a NOBEL PRIZE
award – in literature and the propagation of the English language (since it is
an international language).
Now it’s easier for me to read the English words. This is why I like the THRASS
Picturechart! At first I didn’t know how to say some words. It was confusing.
Now I look at the boxes the keywords help to say the rest of the words. Also,
Thanks for saying that the pronunciation doesn’t matter so much because we have
different ways of speaking. GREAT! Merci!
This course has highlighted how I should teach reading and spelling in a more
logical sequence. It has broadened my exposure in phoneme and grapheme
identification and analysis. It will certainly help me to teach especially my
less able spellers and readers in a better way, given the extensive spelling
choices for the different phonemes. Thanks Hilary and well done!
Really gave me a much better understanding of how to use THRASS. I’ve been
battling with it for a while. It has given me a bank of ideas to use and
hopefully this will help my students especially those struggling with spelling.
I will now make better use of the resources available and feel more confident. A
very informative course – lively and interesting too! The games are a great way
to teach skills.
A very insightful and learning experience! For me it has happened very luckily
just after the reading course – and all through I was making very fruitful
connections. Definitely a-ha! experience at times. I am looking forward to use
it in my future classroom/s because it is user-friendly and very practical in
its application (explaining GCA and NPS). The presentation was very clear and
interesting and held the audience all the way through. I loved the games we
played. All the best in your endeavours!
The course has really helped and developed my knowledge on the use of the THRASS
chart. I enjoy the games and know the children will enjoy them too.
It has been an eye-opener, more of the questions I have had been answered. I
feel more confident to teach THRASS now.
This has proved to be not only an excellent course but one that has been
reassuring too. THRASS is a comprehensive literacy tool but there are other
tools that may prove to be equally effective with children with special
educational needs. I have learnt much and was particularly impressed by the
multi-sensory and cumulative approach to teaching. The combination of theory and
practice has enabled me to appreciate the wide strategies and games I can use to
enhance individual skills.
Really enjoyable. Although I have the chart I didn’t really understanding it
until the workshop. I can now confidently use THRASS. I wish we were given the
chance to demonstrate it in your presence.
Hilary, it was a really great, informative two days. I now feel far more
confident towards the whole THRASS method. Many thanks. I can’t wait to get into
a classroom and give it a go.
I am thrilled! It is difficult to say what and how I feel! I believe that I have
a better understanding of the ‘making’ of THRASS. Often I sat and smiled during
your presentation because an experience I have had with parents and children
would cross my mind. At the time, I could not provide answers or understand my
next move. I remembered working with children learning the THRASS Picture Chart
and wondering “what is next?” WHY?” Now I know! I feel comfortable saying that
THRASS can be an effective tool for helping anyone to learn to read and write
the English language. Thank you for providing me with this understanding.
I found the course very good. First it has given me more meaning to THRASS –
meaning of graph, trigraph, digraph, quadgraph etc. and the importance of
picture location and the role each grapheme plays at a particular location.
Again, how it can help in transfer of learning, e.g. description, spelling etc.
and how it helps play a lot of games.
I have learnt from this course that even though there are different
pronunciations, THRASS guides you to make the best standardised choice. THRASS
has also helped me to think critically about words and where they can fit on the
chart. My understanding is much clearer than before.
Very good course. I picked up lots of great ideas for class activities, also
certain issues were clarified. I’ll feel a lot more comfortable about working on
THRASS lessons in the classroom now, as the rules don’t seem so rigid anymore.
I enjoyed being shown strategies to teach THRASS. I have a good understanding
about some quadgraphs e.g. (eight) as in eight and how the phoneme/sound can
change when you add a letter to it e.g. height. On the whole, it was an
informative workshop.
It was a very informative, wonderful workshop that taught me a lot about
teaching THRASS. Now I have a better understanding about how to teach my
students. I was also able to find some challenge activities to use with my 10-11
year old students. My students will be closely working with their kindergarten
buddies in THRASS. I think that it would be a great practice for them. Thank you
for the fantastic workshop.
Good course. I’ve had quite a bit of ‘unofficial ‘ THRASS training so some bits
were repetitive, but I got some good ideas for games.
Informative.
Very interesting and valuable because it gave me a broader view of THRASS. I
have come to better understand what THRASS is all about and how it can be taught
better for children to understand.
Thoroughly enjoyed the course. Hilary’s explanations made my prior (little)
knowledge of THRASS much clearer. I can now work with the THRASS charts with
more confidence. I did not understand the NPS but I hope to read more about it.
I feel that I am in a better position to use the THRASS resources.
I found the introduction to various materials and items on file especially
useful, as I am more likely to use them now! Some of the information I already
knew, but I could see it was enlightening and new to others, which was good. The
mini lesson ideas were helpful. Your positive attitude was great.
Hilary, I really did enjoy this course and I hope to teach most of what I heave
learnt during course. I also thought that we should have some more time because
I thought that it was pretty short and lot of stuff to learn in the shortest
possible time. However, it was great having you over. Have a great time!
It’s been a very wonderful programme. I read an overview of it on the Internet
some few weeks ago before I was told there was gonna be a workshop on it. I was
so excited. All this while in my teaching profession I’ve been using our local
standard system of teaching reading and handwriting skills and it hasn’t seemed
very effective with that method. I’m so excited this method is already in place
and we are receiving so many positive results. I hope THRASS has come to stay.
Could the THRASS chart also be made coloured instead of black and white?
The course has been very helpful and interesting. I now have a clear basis of
THRASS and I would like to know more about it. I do not find it so difficult as
I thought it was. I still have problems with the alphabet writing such as “c and
o” around “I and j” down, around, lift, dot. “e and s” around, around. Seems it
will be confusing for the 4-5 year old children.
God bless you richly for so much valuable input. I have really enjoyed the
course. I realise it is very loaded so I couldn’t understanding everything
within the brief period allotted. However, with consistent practice I’m sure to
get the hang of it. Thank you for coming to Ghana. Personally I had been looking
very forward to attending such a course. On another note, you really talk very
fast and body language was warm and infectious. At times I thought you droned on
for too long bringing in some lack of attention. But you’ve inspired me as a
Teacher with your long experience and you appear so young, fresh and lively in
spite of the years. I guess it’s a blessing for your contributions towards
education.
This course has been very eye opening and has helped me get a better picture of
THRASS. I really enjoyed most aspects of the teaching and would have loved if we
had more time to really get down all the new terminologies. I would love to know
if there is a correspondence course either on line or by post? Great teaching
Hilary.
This course has been very fruitful. As a Teaching Assistant I have had the
chance to use it with students in my class with the help of my teacher, and also
due to a few trainings on it. This course has really enhanced my knowledge and I
think I am now in a better position than before in helping students.
This course has been very helpful and educative for me. This has really opened
my knowledge into knowing more about various ways and games that can be used to
teach the children. I would love this course to be done again and again and
probably for the parents too.
I have now a clear understanding of what THRASS really means. I can teach my
class with no hesitations. Thanks for coming.
I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation of THRASS and can see how useful this will
be in my EAL classroom. I now feel I have a good understanding of the whole
concept and will be happy and confident to begin using the resources. Hilary
provided an interesting and entertaining course.
