Very informative and interesting. I feel so much more enriched with knowledge. Many things mentioned in this class I did not know e.g. 20 vowel sounds but 5 vowel letters! I am looking forward to use these methods! I like that the course is very interactive too! Therefore there won’t be any children sleeping in class! This has been a very interesting and helpful programme! The THRASS programme is well designed and covers reading, writing and spelling for all grades! It is something I will do with my class and my own children one day! The resources given to us are amazing! I wish this programme was around when I was younger as my spelling sucks!

This course helped me a lot in terms of understanding the ever-changing sounds of letters. It was very well presented, fun, interactive and very meaningful. It was definitely not a waste of time. I feel much more confident in teaching literacy but I also wish that there was a similar course to cater for people who will be teaching in Xhosa schools!

I have benefited by learning another method of teaching phonics, reading and spelling skills. I enjoyed how enthusiastic one can be about obtaining a new skill and can only imagine how our learners are not only going to benefit but also learn an exciting new method. The exciting music will really consolidate a great learning experience! 

I enjoyed finding out about this alternative way of training and it is a pity that it is not included in the curriculum. It would be nice if a guideline was provided for indulging the course in school curriculums! I was interested to experiment with and find out more about the use of the cued speech and deaf schools. I would have liked some more game suggestions or ideas for using these materials throughout the grades and phases in levels! A list of explaining for the abbreviations might be helpful! 

I really enjoyed the course and found it to be very informative and useful as my school has already implemented THRASS. I now look forward to using it to its full potential in the classroom! I have a few students who definitely have difficulties in writing and spelling and I feel confident that I will be able to use THRASS to help those learners reach their full potential. I enjoyed Hilary’s presentation. 

As a learning support teacher I have learned so much. I enjoyed my two days! 

Brilliant! I was sceptical at first, thought it was another ‘pie in the sky’ programme that was going to solve all problems. But the programme is great! It really provides the student and teacher with a solid grounding in phonics! I love how it lends itself to improving reading skills and how the games can be used to consolidate the sounds instead drill skill methods! Definitely use it in the class and refer to books regularly. Love the music, chants, pictures and games! 

The first day we were bombarded with information but as we were slowly introduced to the topic I now have a better understanding of how THRASS and the structure of language works! It is now the last day and I feel excellent in my approach towards THRASS! All in all-the presenter was very prepared and was quite knowledgeable! Many thanks Hilary you are great!    

I feel two days was too little for all the input! This was a very useful course; I definitely learned a lot wish the pace was slower. 

This course showed me another way of teaching literacy. The lecturer was very excited which made me excited! I enjoyed the course and hope to do it in my future teaching career! 

Very helpful. I gained a lot especially that English is not my first language! Now I know that there aren’t 5 vowels but 20! I had a great two days full of everything (resources, knowledge, skills). Hope you can do this every year to refresh our old teacher’s minds!

Lecturer is brilliant! Full of knowledge and motivation skills really encouraged myself which made me become more engaged with the THRASS program! The entire program has been thought out, everything has been included and therefore I can see it working well in a classroom environment! 

Very well presented! A great way of teaching literacy! The songs and raps are very helpful in learning the sounds. Although some examples of teaching were seen, it would be nice to see some of the programme being used! 

Very informative and interesting! I had never heard of THRASS before so it was great to learn about what it is all about! I do feel through that it would be difficult to teachers in a school that is not using it as a whole! 

I think this way of teaching is very fantastic. As we observe in class, one sees that children have a problem with graphemes! It makes sense that children need to know about sounds and where they live! For children to better understand how to spell words! It is definitely a benefit for all learners and teachers! 

The fact that there are 20 vowel sounds never occurred to me until this course! I found it very helpful and can’t wait to try it on my class! A very enthusiastic lecturer! I definitely learned things I never knew before such as digraphs etc...

This approach to teaching literacy makes sense, and I can see and understand why it is so successful! I did find that maybe the sessions were a bit long and I found myself drifting off every now and then but Hilary did put in a great effort to keep us alive and awake and bring us back to concentrate!
