GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS ACCREDITED CERTIFICATE,
GTG, SOUTH AFRICA, FEB 13-14, 2009

Portable Document Format

I have gained a whole new perspective on teaching spelling, writing and reading! I feel I am prepared to go into a classroom and teach THRASS with confidence! Spelling and reading can be taught in a logical and most importantly a fun way! And learning should definitely be easy and fun! Looking forward to using THRASS in my teaching career!

I have learned that the letters have more than one sound! It has opened my eyes to a new way of teaching and I will use it in my class! I am so glad someone thought of this programme!

This course has definitely helped me, even at my age, to understand how to spell, read and pronounce English words! It gives us as new teachers a new way of teaching and helping children! It is a new century and therefore time for new teaching techniques in English so that all children from different cultures get the same opportunities in life! Thank you for an eye opener!

Extremely interesting and very well presented! This is a wonderful programme that makes sense and it will equip me with skills to be able to teach learners from different cultures and who speak other languages! I can’t wait to be able to implement THRASS!

I was so blown away by this method! It just made me realise that I have missed out on so much. I have learned so much! This method is really easy to use and is fun and will engage all areas of the child’s life! It took a while for me to grasp the concept but at the end of the second day it all came together and made so much sense! I was so impressed and can’t wait to implement it!

Most valuable and will enable me to teach literacy in a way that will make sense to the learner! During the four years of my studies I had not come across such an amazing and dynamic teaching method! I cannot wait to begin using this programme to help so many children who have extreme difficulty with reading and spelling! I am so confident and know I can now make a difference!

An interesting course to learn how to teach English as we have never learned about this and now we have the tools to teach it! I think THRASS is going to be of great help as even I now understand where the sounds come from! I feel that every second language teacher should do this course!

Quite mind blowing. I learned a lot more about English and how to teach it! I sometimes felt upset and angry because it felt like my whole foundation of English was being shaken! I can now argue differently on the aspects regarding reading, writing, speaking and spelling of English!

I’ve learned a lot and I wish we could have learned about THRASS in the first year! I learned that English could be taught in a fun way and that kids could enjoy themselves while they learn! I believe that children do learn best while they are having fun! I am sure that THRASS will help me next year to teach English as a second language! Even I understand English better!

A wonderful and extremely inspirational course! It has inspired me to want to use THRASS in my own classroom! It has even helped me to better understand the teaching of spelling and language and opened my eyes to a far more interesting and fun way of incorporating it into the classroom!

This was a valuable course! Wish I did it earlier in my life so my English could be better! I am looking forward using THRASS in my class one day!

A very useful and productive programme where all the senses are being used to teach the children how to read, write and spell! I think that the children would enjoy learning with the THRASS programme because it is fun and easy and the children learn through play! I feel that the THRASS programme must be implemented in every school because it entails everything that the children need and it is fun!

I was and still am pleasantly surprised by the entire THRASS programme! I think it is going to be extremely beneficial to young learners in South-African schools! A quality literacy programme has been lacking for a number of years and this shows in learners current literacy rates! The fact that THRASS is interactive, uses songs, flash cards and various other media forms, allows all learners the opportunity to reach their full potential! I believe this programme is brilliant!

Very valuable to me! I enjoyed it immensely and learned a lot! Even as a grown up I learned so much about English during this course and I am now quite excited to teach English!

Very good course, valuable learning experience and useful to use in my own classroom teaching either first or second language English! Will help a lot with children who do not speak English as a first language! I never knew that English had so many different sounds!

Interesting. It was presented magnificently! As a second language English speaker I found it enriching. As a University student some things are now clearer! I hope to implement THRASS in an Afrikaans school to help the learners understand concepts properly from the beginning!

I enjoyed this course a lot because I learned a lot! I am definitely going to implement this in my classroom! The THRASS programme can only be beneficial as the learners will benefit in a life long way! I personally feel that the THRASS programme is excellent and thoroughly explained! I will definitely suggest that every teacher do the course!

I think the THRASS course was very good! I was scared of how I was going to teach English because I am an Afrikaans student! This will help me in the future! For my benefit and my learners! All the media is very good and carefully planned! ‘Stunning’! I would like to get all the media one day and implement the THRASS programme in my school! I’ve learned a lot and can’t wait to teach one day! The videos were an inspiration!

Very helpful, not only because it is in English but I got a lot of ideas to integrate with other subjects and how to teach it! I know that now I would be able to teach reading, writing and spelling in English with ease and without feeling insecure but with the confidence and that I would be successful in what I do! And that the children would actually learn and enjoy it!

Valuable in that it opened my eyes to a new world and it taught me a lot! It was interesting to see how much more information is available to us and how advanced it can get with regard to the use of technology! I am very appreciative of the resources as it will definitely kick start my future career!

A wonderful experience! I learned a lot more about English and I feel much more comfortable to teach English as a second language! I feel that this course is a wonderful way to teach children and that they will succeed more than in boring English teaching! The children will enjoy this much more, after this course for children and adult English, this will never be seen as a difficult subject!

This course taught me that there is not just one way of doing something! Change is good! All the ten different stages have opened my eyes to show that English can be taught in a more simple way! Teaching, handwriting, reading and spelling skills will be much easier to accomplish when all teachers follow this method in class!

I am crazy about THRASS! This is very helpful in Foundation Phase because I have been studying in Afrikaans and now I can take English as an additional language! There might be a learner in my class that can’t read Afrikaans so then this programme gives me a guideline and makes it easier!

At the start of the course, I was a bit nervous because I did a course on phonics and battled but during the course I found it a very simple and easy to understand course! The lecturer presenting the course was prepared and I gained a lot of information during these two days! The information I have learned will help when teaching THRASS in the classroom! I hope all schools will implement this programme because it is a fun way to learn!

Absolutely marvellous. I have learned so much and they say that one is never too old to learn and that is absolutely true! As a fourth year student I feel that it is so important to know as much as we can because we are teaching the young children of our world to become citizens who will themselves teach their next generation children! Spelling, reading and writing is so essential to work oneself up in the workplace and world and I have learned that if you start reinforcing the THRASS in schools at a young age, the children will carry the knowledge through their growing lives! Thank you for a great course! Thank you to ABSA!

THRASS is a very good and valuable thing to implement in schools! I learned a lot about English! This will definitely help our children to be more literate! This will help children to think and to learn and not only memorise!

From the beginning of this course I was fascinated with THRASS! Although I am Afrikaans the course made sense and it could definitely work in schools! I was amazed with the information I got to go out in schools and actually use it! I learned more how to teach subjects properly! And the way you have to teach children! Thank you for THRASS!

Absolutely well-worth it! I learned a lot and I’ll surely make use of this programme and share it with everybody I know! It changed my mindset about teaching literacy and now know what is expected from teaching it! What a break-through in my knowledge! Thank you THRASS!

It is shocking that we were taught of 6 (a-e-i-o-u-y) vowels! I believe that more schools should use THRASS! THRASS teaches learners to remember and not forget like teaching them like parrots! I was very interested with the two day course as I learned a lot! I believe that learner like to learn through song and dance and that it is a easier way to learn! I would also like to thank ABSA for giving us this opportunity to be part of THRASS! THRASS is an asset for any school!

I have learned the importance of the process in teaching reading, handwriting and spelling in young learners! THRASS makes a difference in all the difficulties in English and does not just focus on five vowel sounds! This is an integrated course that focuses on verbal fluency, general knowledge, memory etc… This is a fun way to learn and suites South-Africa!

Now I have learned what THRASS is and how to implement it in the classroom. I think it’s an excellent programme and a much more fun way to learn! The children seem to learn much faster and learning standards are very high! I am very impressed and would love to work with the programme in my class! South Africa and the world should all use this programme!

Enjoyable. I think the programme is fantastic and wish I had it in my school! I still struggle to spell and I think this will benefit me! I am very excited to start implementing the things I have learned here! The presentation was very well presented, clear and easy to understand and fun! I am so glad that education is changing and is catching up with the times because our children deserve innovative, interactive and reinforced learning!

I really think that this programme will benefit all schools in South-Africa! In my four years of studying we have learned a lot of theory, but knowing how to implement THRASS is very useful! I will definitely implement this programme in my class!

An amazing course! I need to process the information more after the course, because I am so conditioned in the old process at teaching because that is how I was taught! But I live this course and I think this method is fantastic and the numerous resources available are great! I will definitely make attempts to use this method, if I am able to in the school I end up in, and once I have processed it all for myself! I am very pleased with what I have learned here over these two days!

A brilliant new way of teaching the English language and I enjoyed the course! THRASS makes learning exciting and from the videos I can see how THRASS speeds up the learning process!

Taught me a lot! I enjoyed it a lot. I can’t believe that a person can learn to read, spell and write in such a creative manner! The media and technology used is fantastic and I would love to have all the resources! My knowledge has been broadened and I will make sure that I go to a school that uses THRASS! I would like to see how to implement it and what the difference in standards is with non THRASS schools! Thank you for an unbelievable course. I can’t wait for the Sing-a-Long Session!

I learned a lot and I’ve got a remedy! I believe that I will still use these methods and knowledge a lot! This will also give us an opportunity if we want to teach overseas! I now understand after four years of studying what the difference is between phoneme and grapheme!

An innovative way to implement spelling, reading and handwriting! THRASS can be very useful in the English classroom; I wish there could be a resource like THRASS for Afrikaans.  I find the songs cute and easy and it has lessons to learn in every one of them! The Raps and Sequences are also quite annoying but it tends to stick like glue in your mind; a-b, a-b-c, a-b-c-d-e-f-g! THRASS helped me a lot with the pronunciation of words that I struggle with as an Afrikaans speaker!

I have learned about graphemes and phonemes! My eyes have been opened and I realise that there are more to pronunciation and spelling of words that I thought. The course was a great learning experience. THRASS should be implemented in all schools, as it is an advantage to all learners! THRASS enables learners to learn in a fun way! It allows interaction! I have also learned that we should let learners articulate the sounds and link the sounds to key words! Thank you for an excellent and informative two days! I hope that Namibia will also enforce THRASS in the schools, they will only benefit from it! Learners learn through visual, kinaesthetic and auditory learning! That’s why songs will help a lot and it is fun and experimental! THRASS is an asset!

Very useful. As being part of the PGCE we have not yet had a practical in a school classroom! I will most definitely be more likely to challenge the children a lot more than I previously would have! I can now see that children are most definitely capable even at a young age! Even though this course was very brief and somewhat rushed the structure behind it is fantastic! I will definitely encourage all teachers I come across in my career to look into doing this course! I would also like to look into doing more courses through THRASS in the future!

Very nice. It had a lot of new things in it that I did not know and I learned a lot and I think it can work well in schools, but I am not sure just how well it will be or can be used to learn Afrikaans because I think that you are only going to be able to use the course for English and second language! But I liked doing the course!

Very insightful. I never knew about all the possible phonemes and how you could actually make English learning fun! I am not very good with it but now I have more confidence! The terminology is not confusing or difficult it makes perfect sense! The Sing-a-Long is wonderfully integrated! Phonemes and graphemes are two different things but have the same meaning when you read, write and spell! I’ve learned that graphemes could be divided into two different groups and that a few keywords can open a whole new world! It’s amazing!

Valuable! I learned how to teach in English! This was actually the building blocks because you will start with a picture and go on! THRASS is the starting point for reading and writing and that it is valuable in the children’s interest where they will learn to read and learn the correct sounds!

Very meaningful! Each student should have the opportunity to be introduced to THRASS! This is a very successful programme that should be implemented into every school, because each child will benefit from it! This is understandable and joyous and learners will with this way learn successfully!

Valuable and if it could possibly be implemented in all schools it would improve our country’s literacy tremendously! The only thing I feel is that it is not realistic at this point in time if the programme is not sponsored by our government! The overall cost is just too high for most schools without sponsors! Otherwise I find it a valuable programme!

I enjoyed the course a lot! To see how English can be taught to learners in such a fun way is very encouraging! We are a very lucky group to be part of this course and for the resources we received I am really grateful and thank ABSA! To teach any new idea to learners is a very long process but with the different ways that you can teach and getting interactive it is much easier! To be able to link words with pictures and through song and dance! THRASS is an asset for any school or teacher!

I learned about the importance of THRASS in schools and ways to present it to the learners! THRASS is a programme to help children to read, spell and write graphemes and phonemes! I also learned about the importance of letter location as well as formation! Thank you I learned a lot!

Interesting from day one to day two, I really enjoyed it! Our facilitator was using very useful resources! I benefited a lot from her, she was happy about teaching the methods and the way she presents everything to us was really impressive! It was marvellous!

A great course; it covers every aspect of literacy! I think it will work wonderfully with learners and we’ve seen from clips that it truly works! A great inspiring presentation! Thank you very much for the resources and opportunity! I definitely learned a lot and will implement it in my teaching!

As a second language teacher I think that THRASS is a great aspect in which you can learn English! I feel sad that I was not taught English in this manner! It is an excellent programme and everyone should follow it! Thank you for the opportunity that was given to us!

I have learned different things and as to why THRASS is important and will help learners! I had a problem with pronouncing to vowels as they are similar and almost sound the same! But I feel that with practise this will improve and I will be able to help the learners! The course was well organised and done well but was long and not all the fun was spread out throughout the day which made it boring at times! But overall it was a valuable course and worth the time and very interesting!

Very fruitful, especially for me because I am working with young children in the foundation phase! In my school, English is the first additional language so learners in my phase are going to acquire vocabulary enrichment at an early stage, whereby through auditory and vision and synthesising learners becomes easy and interesting! Our learners are going to read easily through acting, hearing and seeing! THRASS is giving learners skills for life whereby concrete represent abstract!

Brilliant! I was a little confused in the beginning because everything was up in the air and wasn’t linking together for me! However as we went on all the pieces came together! I was surprised that THRASS could be used with children as young as four! The programme is very complex and I do feel that you have to be careful when using all the different media, because there is so much to use and it might be overwhelming! The media that can be used and that is available is really amazing.

Very insightful and valuable! I believe it is an excellent learning tool within the school system! I enjoyed the course thoroughly as well as the presenter!

This course was more than worth it! I have learned a lot about teaching English as second language! When I entered the room at first I didn’t know a thing about teaching English in general! Now I have been given the tools and knowledge to do my best and achieve my goal as a teacher!

This course changed the way I think about teaching, handwriting, reading and spelling skills! It is a new way of teaching with great media and wonderful resource file! Although it is not based on the usual standard way it is lots of fun and interactive! Learners are not passive learners anymore and with only a few years of THRASS learners they will benefit from it for a lifetime!

A very interesting approach and I would definitely try it in my class! The multimedia is brilliantly done! As a person I had speech problems and I find if I had this I would have been much better academically! I think that THRASS should be presented in our first year of University! I do have concerns that it may confuse learners as each learner learns differently!

This course has set a foundation in the aspect of implementing English in the classroom! I am glad I joined this course as I will use this method in future! I will have to get more insight before I can use this effectively!

This course gave me a whole different idea about English! I never thought about all the rules and aspects when it comes to English spelling! It usually comes naturally. It is a great programme to use in schools, it makes more sense! Everything is neat and organised! I would love working with it because it is so systematic! During the course I would like to be more physically busy and like to participate more interactively! It gets boring in the end to just sit still! Otherwise great experience and thanks for all the effort you put in! It will make a teachers life much easier in class!

It was a very interesting course with a new perspective and approach to handwriting, reading and spelling! Will be great to start applying and hoping to see a difference! I do however have some critic about this course with unanswered questions!

I enjoyed this course! My eyes opened to a wonderful new world of teaching English that I will be able to use to successfully teach English! For second language learners English is very difficult to acquire! THRASS has many effective and well thought out resources that will aid my teaching! The learning is productive and fun and the learners will be able to keep trade of their own achievements and progress! Implemented in a classroom THRASS will be able to help younger learners become effective and successful English language users!

An enriching experience and I have learned so much more in two days than what I have learned in three years at University! This was a sensible opportunity! The presenter was enthusiastic and it was fun and interactive! This is a fun programme that learners will enjoy and learn from!

Was insightful and the active participation was enjoyed by all! Video clips were fantastic as one is able to understand how a teacher goes from theory to practise as well as to see how the children thrive from this system!

This course helped me to see a way to teach learners how to read, spell and write words! Was very well presented, pity it has to be done all in one go since attention is lost easily and the novelty wears off really quickly even with all the breaks! Would be even better if smaller groups could be worked with for more understanding and help! Overall was very insightful and meaningful!

Very interesting and very valuable to my future teaching career! I found that the programme is fun and I believe kids will love doing the programme! The ideas and resources are great and can be integrated into many different aspects within the classroom! The course was very knowledgeable!

Very interesting! I will definitely make use of it in my class! I have learned a lot of new things! I knew what a consonant and a vowel was but in two days I have learned more! I loved the video clips that were shown! I feel that the teachers must be lively in the classrooms and that the learners must be active and through THRASS the learners will be more active! I like the resources that we were given but I will have to study through them before I integrate it in my classroom!

I have learned a lot. It has given me a secure feeling for when I am going to teach English in a school! The resources are very nice and I would like to invest in all of it!

Very valuable, I learned a lot!

Very interesting and helpful! It was very long and I think the course can be shortened if the facilitator don’t repeat herself over and over! But overall it was a good experience!

THRASS is a really interesting package and I do think that it can work! But I do want to know how do you implement it with Afrikaans schools that only start with English in grade 3? Is it going to work there? I was a nice course and I learned a lot!

I never knew how to teach English to the learners, because English is my second language! THRASS taught me that there is an easier way to teach phonics! I like the music as a method to teach the letters and sounds! It is a fun way for the learners to learn and they will remember it!

Taught me valuable information to teach English as either a first or second language! I realise the need for change in the education system! I feel that this is a very valuable course that needs to be implemented in all schools to better the reading and writing! I can really see the need for the course and I sincerely hope that I do get the opportunity to teach at a school that uses the THRASS programme! I do appreciate the fact that a certificate is issued for completion of the course! I feel that it will be good to get a job and really change the way that the learners use language!

In the beginning of the course I didn’t really like it as I was wondering how it would be implemented but at the end of the second day everything made sense! If I ever go teach at an English school I will definitely make use of it! I have learned the alphabetical sounds and how to teach them in a fun way! This is a very informative programme and children will benefit from it!

I learned that the alphabet is bigger and much more complicated! Also gained more ideas for class activities such as Sing-a-Long movements etc... Thanks, this was brilliant!

This course has helped me a lot and I really feel that the ideas were very useful because they really showed how the teachers can implement the course! The course is presented in a way that keeps all the participants interested! Very fascinating course!

This is the second time that I have done this course! It has helped to reinforce my believe that this is a useful programme for helping to teach the various literacy skills! I did however find the sessions very long and think that fewer examples could have been used and more focus could have been placed on actual implementation through the video clips etc...

I have learned how to break up words into Phonemes and Graphemes! How to teach English as they don’t teach us at Campus! This course has showed how to make the English language fun to learn! It is a shame that we won’t be able to use the font as our schools font is different!

Very valuable! I think it is a great way to ensure that learning takes place effectively! What I learned during this course is how to teach the basics of English! Meaning how to get learners to learn new words and by doing that and using the yellow picturechart to learn new words and improving spelling and reading! As well as how to use the resources to make sure that learning takes place effectively and that learning takes place in a fun and creative way! It is very enjoyable!

Very interesting. I have never heard of it before but I found it enjoyable! I am privileged to be on this course to improve my English and also the learners English! THRASS is a good concept!

This course has taught me about phonetic sounds and how you can teach children to understand English better! I think the course was dragged out too much and could have been shorter seeing that we already know how to spell, write and read! I also think it is difficult to use in schools that use Grade 1 font and to pronounce words like in England!

Having come across this method before, during teaching practise period, I found this course very informative and has helped me to understand why it operates the way it does! I feel that two days was not enough time to cover everything as most of the information was very shallow and if we could go into more depth for each stage! I am interested to see how it works in the school and to implement it myself! I believe that the method is valuable and will work well!

I have come across the THRASS programme on both my previous two practical experiences! I never knew what it completely entailed until these past two days! I feel that in the schools I was at it was not implemented properly! There is an amazing basis to this programme! I feel that it could possible be a lot easier for learners as it is based on helping them to learn easier and quicker! I feel excited to try out THRASS on my next practical as I know that schools do it! I feel I have enough knowledge to go out confidently and teach THRASS with enthusiasm and passion!

A valuable course! It has helped me gain a better understanding of how to teach English to children! I believe that, if THRASS is implemented properly, it will be a good investment for all! I feel I now have the basics to apply what I have learned if I am faced with THRASS in my future teaching!

Enjoyable, informative and interesting! English is a very difficult subject for Afrikaans-speaking learners to learn! With the help of THRASS it will be much easier! There were very interesting ways and ideas shown to us to teach the learners! The media is very colourful and I would love to have all of it! I look forward to the Sing-a-Long! I will definitely implement THRASS in my classroom!

The course has made it clearer for me to be able to teach learners English! This was very interesting and the resources we received will help me a lot in my practical! The sounds make much more sense to me and I wish I was taught in this way then my English would have been much better! The course was at a bad time and I don’t understand why the University waited so long!

I am pleased with the THRASS programme as it opened my mined and eyes! It evoked a new way of teaching literacy especially with phonics, phonemes, graphemes and a variety of language structure and use to my young learners! I am appreciative of the facilitator who conducted the presentation workshop! If I get an opportunity again I will never let it go!

I have benefited a lot from the THRASS programme! How to teach the learners spelling, writing and reading! The pronunciation of different words that I was not aware of! I have gained a lot of things from THRASS! Thank you Laola for your good work, keep it up!

This is my second THRASS attendance and this time round it was very different! The first time round the course was given by Mr Alan Davies! It was energetic but I guess I was a bit overwhelmed because I did not fully understand everything about the programme! This second time round I feel I understand better and how to implement! I love THRASS and wish the school I get employed at uses it! I will use it at home to help my sibling and family members!

In the beginning of the course I looked forward to it! I found it very interesting! It got boring and everything was repeated too often! THRASS is a good way to teach learners how to understand, read, write and spell English!

Very interesting programme! I especially like the Sing-a-Long component! The presenter is experienced but shares too much personal information. I would have liked to see more video material! It gives a clearer explanation of the THRASS programme and it is not boring! Thank you for an excellent learning experience!

I have enjoyed the course! The facilitator Laola is doing her work in full force! I want to tell that I’ve learned a lot, a new change that prevails has to be adapted with the process! I like to come again just to reinforce the practice if THRASS! I am going to explore and share with the learners, community and at home! I loved the two day workshop!

Interesting! I enjoyed most of it! Although it was a bit long and was repeated the whole time! I will be able to use parts of it! I feel that being a fourth year student we know most of things like using different materials and strategies! The chart is a wonderful idea!

I really enjoyed this course and what a clever way to learn! I believe that this will be for my benefit one day! Thank you for the opportunity!

During my last practical I was asked to do an English lesson with Gr 2 students! I didn’t know where to start or how to do it! After THRASS I am more capable of doing this now! It will also be of good use to me from next year since I am planning to teach in London for a short while! Now I am capable to teach English and in English!

An interesting alternative to the old out-dated way of teaching English! If I am to be an English teacher I would most definitely use this methodology. I would certainly also use it for teaching second language English! I wish I could have been taught English like this then my spelling may have been better!

A really good idea! Just not for a fourth year student! If we did this in the first year and our lecturers followed it as well it would have been amazing! Us Afrikaans students enjoy it, but we will never be able to implement it a 100%! Most of the basics we know and will never change and I feel that too much time went into that! Other than this I feel it is a wonderful invention and a good add on to the education programme! The children will definitely benefit from this!

I really think that if it can be implemented in schools that the children will learn so much faster! The only thing is what if you don’t have all the resources or what if the school doesn’t follow THRASS? But I learned a lot!

Yes I have learned something! The course was very well presented and I will most definitely use this practical information.

A wonderful course and I have really benefited from this! I would definitely want to implement this in the school where I teach if they are not using it! I think children can learn a lot with this! I can’t wait to read more and find out more about THRASS because I think it is brilliant! I really enjoyed the course and I hope to do a lot more THRASS in the future!

THRASS is a fantastic way of teaching handwriting, reading and spelling! The course was very informative and the resources very useful! I am looking forward to using this methodology in my own teaching as well as finding out more about THRASS through practical experience!

Very informative! The THRASS method is a brilliant method to us in school! I think it is a much simpler way to teach learners to read, write and spell! I am glad to have been introduced to the method and hope to be able to use it in schools or extra lessons as much as possible!

I can see how effective this will be in schools! I gained a lot from this course and how important it is for learners to grasp a topic before moving on! I found the resources amazing and will definitely be implementing it in my classroom!

I found the course the most interesting and beneficial to my future of being and English speaking teacher! I think there has been a great paradigm shift from the old way of teaching to a new exciting method! The children who get taught in the THRASS method will develop optimal skills in handwriting, reading and spelling!

This has made it easier for me to use words differently as a future teacher and learners of South-Africa! The course caught my attention but it got very long! This was inspiring and motivating!

The THRASS concept is very interesting and informative! The course was just very long by repeating information throughout the course! I will definitely make use of the THRASS system!

Extremely well planned! There were no hitches at all and all the course content was discussed in full detail! The instructor was very interactive and knowledgeable about the content! The course was extremely long but valuable in all THRASS aspects! I believe that the course will only benefit me and my teaching career and was an appreciated opportunity!

Course was very long but enriching! The concept THRASS is based on is great and if my school were using THRASS I am going to teach it one day!

The course taught me a lot; it is a very interesting way to teach learners! I also think that the children really enjoy it as we saw on the video clips! We were not taught like this and if we were my pronunciation and English would have been far better! I will definitely implement THRASS. If the school I go to don’t use THRASS, I’ll convince them to use it!

I think this programme will mean a lot in the classroom one day! I understand better now when I have to teach children letters that they have different sounds and that I will be able to teach it better! I will definitely use this method in the class! I also learned about ‘graphs’ and how to pronounce correctly so that I will be able to teach correctly!

The course has taught me a lot! I have also learned how to teach learners in an easier way and to make it more fun! I now understand the difference between a graph, digraph and a trigraph! I also understand the vowels better! I think that THRASS makes it nice for children to learn words and language! It was definitely worth it to be part of the course and I really enjoyed it!

This course taught me the basics to implementing THRASS into my classroom one day! I found the course very inspirational and valuable! The programme designed is very good in terms of helping learners to master the English language! The video clips helped me to realise that this is possible to implement this programme in areas which are disadvantaged! I enjoyed the course and can’t wait to implement it into my class one day!

Really enjoyable! I learned a lot on how to teach English to second language learners! Some of the information that I received I have dealt with before, so I found it time consuming to hear repetition of knowledge I have already e.g. Piaget’s Constructivist Theory’. The course was very valuable and I will use it in my school practical!

Enriching and helpful to me as a future educator! The THRASS programme seems to be rewarding to the learners and I would love to implement it in the classroom someday! The presentation of the course has made me enthusiastic about THRASS and I look forward to reading and learning more about it in the future!

I am pleased that as a fourth year education student I had the opportunity to attend the THRASS course. I learned a lot in the English language as I learned something myself in the course!

Very interesting and I learned exactly how to use the THRASS system although I have already used it during both my practices because the schools used THRASS! The course itself is valuable when teaching learner English! The course was long and tiring but overall enjoyable! I will use THRASS in my future as an educator!

A really good learning experience and I would like to know more of it since I still find it very confusing just because I have never heard of it before! I have to say that I had learned a lot from the course and would definitely consider using this programme in my future teaching career! This programme would also help to improve my English so that I may teach my learners more!

A very interesting course and it feels like I have learned a lot about THRASS and how to implement it into my class one day! I think that the course should be in smaller groups to have more interaction and practical examples! I think it is great for English but can we use it for Afrikaans?

I enjoyed the THRASS course a lot! I found it very useful and learned how to teach English to learners! I was shocked to see how African and other disadvantaged children are able to spell at the age of five! Beautiful! I can’t wait to use THRASS in my own practise!

Very informative and interesting! I found it very informative because THRASS makes it easier and more interesting to learn! The Sing-a-Long CD, book and interactive book is very valuable as children can now be part of their own learning and learn to understand the concept of sounds!

I benefited a lot and feel that it is a wonderful programme, A lot of people will benefit a lot from it, especially our future generation children that have the privilege to be taught through THRASS! This programme is a life long learning experience and I will always treasure it and use it!

I benefited from the theory but at times felt overwhelmed by all the products! (Although they are wonderfully designed and packaged.) I would love to become involved because it is revolutionary!

Helpful because it gave us new insights into how to teach more effectively! Would definitely incorporate THRASS into teaching with the resources we were given!

I can’t believe what I have learned! The fact that there is more than five vowels and that the letters sounds and names differ, and the materials that are used e.g. like music! It makes learning fun and that children want to learn! Children must be able to recognise picture words, letters and sound to be able to read and write! If a child cannot spell a word they will have difficulties in reading!

Helpful and may be good to use in the schools! It will definitely help children in schools who struggle to learn the language but also it will help children who have difficulties! It was just too long to sit down and when your attention span is short ‘very short’ like mine it was a real challenge!

I honestly learned a lot more in this THRASS course than I expected! It was a valuable learning experience that I will certainly use and implement in my classroom! The multi media presentations and video clips were very interesting because you can see the hands on implementation of this programme! I hope this programme will be implemented in every school in South Africa and I will certainly do my own bit to promote this programme in the schools I visit!

I enjoyed the course although I would have enjoyed doing a bit more practical! Before the course I did not know how to teach phonetics to second language learners! After the course I feel more positive to teach to learners! Laola did a great job!

I feel that this course is very valuable and can be used well! I think that the learners will enjoy the work because it is in an interactive and a play way! The course was presented very well as I understand all the concepts and this programme is very nice and I am very excited about it!

Very meaningful to me; it gave me a whole new perspective on how to teach children to be literate in the English language! I have learned a whole lot about the language and am now very motivated to teach the children how to write, read and spell successfully! I have enjoyed it a lot!

I am glad for the introduction to THRASS! I think it is a great programme to use in a new and creative way! Children enjoy music and this is a fun way to learn! I believe the course could be given in less time! I think it would be better to see more practical examples of how this looks in the classroom and less talking about it in theory! Thank you for your time and effort!

Firstly thank you for exposing THRASS to us! I am sure it will always help us in any class situation! THRASS is a good foundation for teaching any language but especially English! It is a good way for schools to look more widely at education! THRASS shows that teaching should be fun! Children should enjoy learning English and I hope the schools in Gauteng implement THRASS in their schools! Laola was a very good mentor!

I learned a lot. The information was very well planned and taught to us! THRASS is a course that looks well on paper and you can really use it in the classroom! You can make your own cards to use in the classroom. All BEd students should be taught to use THRASS!

Fantastic and I would really like to implement this in my classroom next year! This is a really good methodology for parents to use at home! I have realised that learners can start from four years! It is a huge mind shift from OBE or the old syllabus and most of all it is a fun way of learning!

In the beginning I was sceptical about doing this course yet excited at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed doing the course and feel I learned a lot! THRASS is definitely an approach to practise, implement and help develop through all South-African schools! The THRASS course certainly opened my eyes to new techniques and as a future teacher it is something I would try to implement! I enjoyed watching the videos and practicing the activities, you begin to understand how learners will think and how they will enjoy it! This course will most certainly help me with my future teaching practicals this year! Thank you for the resources and a highly informative course!

This course has given me many ideas to help the learners to learn English and the different sounds! The songs that the learner can sing along they look like they can be a whole lot of fun and that the learners will enjoy themselves as well as learn something at the same time! The songs will teach them not only the 120 keywords but the other words that are not in the song!

An eye opener! I learned so much about integration and helping learners to be literate! I really like the THRASS programme because it involves active participation from the learners! The learners do not only learn new words and phrases but they build confidence to interact! This programme is also beneficial when discipline is kept in mind! I will definitely build on my new found knowledge!

I have really learned a lot about THRASS and I like the concept of it! I think that it is a fresh new way of teaching English and children of all ages will certainly enjoy it and find learning easier! I am very impressed with what I saw and I love the new font! I think that it’s easy on the eye and easy to learn! I sure hope that I will be able to use THRASS in schools in the future! A wonderful experience!

Very informative and valuable! It is of utmost importance that we learn all this at University level as a tool that we can teach young children! The resources are also valuable and one can use them for more than one thing! From THRASS I concluded that teaching reading, writing and spelling does not have to be hard work and that it can also be a fun and exciting exercise! The workshop itself was interesting and intriguing and there was never a dull moment! The speaker was energetic and enthusiastic and this in return kept our attention and made things exciting!
