GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE,
GILGIL, KENYA, APRIL 16-17, 2009

Portable Document Format

Thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot. Extremely well presented and very thorough.

Fabulous! I have learnt so much. I always struggled as a child, now I understand why! I now know where I will start with my children. Thanks so much to Alan and Hilary.

I became increasingly enthusiastic and am now very keen to implement it in Kindergarten and Junior School. We hope to persuade SMT to part with some cash! We may need you to come to our school at a future date and work with our whole staff.

A seriously interesting, refreshing and exciting initiative and presentation on how to implement THRASS. There is sooo much I want to do – I just wish I knew where to start! Another day of practical involvement, trying out things ourselves would have been good. Amazing.

Excellent! Very interesting, informative and enlightening. Keen to get involved with THRASS. I completed my training last year and wish this had been included as part of the course!

Lots of useful stuff learnt, even on a personal level. Quite eye-opening! Hopefully the school will implement it and I will certainly do so with my class and at home with my pre-school child.

A great eye opener – very stimulating. The spelling component was well delivered. I’m looking forward to implementing all that I’ve learnt.

A lively, informative and intelligent course. Learnt a lot – gave me lots to think about. Still have many questions, but need to try it out more effectively in my classroom before I will know whether I need to ask them or not! Look forward to continuing with THRASS in my classroom.

Up beat, fast moving, informative and very progressive. I’m very pleased to have learnt about THRASS for teaching pupils and also, one day, my own kids. Would be good to learn more.

Very well presented. The way forward I’m sure!

Very informative, lots of practical ideas to be used in the classroom. I will recommend that our school pilots THRASS in Key Stage 1, with the view of possibly implementing it throughout school. While the speakers clearly have a passion for the programme, more respect and sensitivity could be shown towards other programmes and the attending teachers personal opinion and experience.

I’ve really enjoyed the course – serious information overload though! I can see the logic of THRASS and I feel very excited about the prospect of teaching it when I return to teaching in schools. In the meantime, I’m going to use it as a tool for teaching adults with English as a second language!

Very good. An eye-opener. Need more of the same . Too short though!

A very inspiring course. I was enthused by your passion for teaching English. There is a lot to learn but once I feel confident I shall use it. All the best and keep up the good work.

A revelation! Great course! Found it hard to keep up, but it answers a lot of questions I’ve had teaching SEN children reading and spelling.

THRASS makes a lot of sense. Lots to take away. Possibly going through stages in chronological order would have helped things to fall into place more quickly, and giving an indication earlier than the second day which stage to use with each age. Would love you to come and train my staff.

Great course! I started off unsure but became quite positive about its implications for teaching reading and spelling. We may not adopt it as a school, but I most certainly will use bits in my class!

A great initiative- especially for those schools where English is a second language for teachers and students alike. The course makes a great deal of sense as I would love to implement it. I’m not sure though how successful it would be unless the whole school took it on board. I now have a headache!

Organisation was rather erratic (not according to pre-course details). However, an energetic start by Alan to ‘hook’ us. Maybe too much defensive talk from Alan in response to questions and at times the answer was too involved. Whole THRASS course was food for thought. Did we need to see so much of your work in townships (commendable as it was). [“What! I only showed a 1 min 34 sec clip of SING-A-LONG on Day 1. On Day 2, I showed two 2-minute STAGE clips and then two ten-minute clips of EXEMPLARY teaching (of THRASS) – covering nursery to Grade 6! 5% of the course teaching was using video. Given your comments, I think you are ungrateful for the thought and effort that was taken to tailor the course to the particular interests and needs of the delegates.” Alan]

This was a great course, an eye-opener that should have taken more than two days. I had often wondered how to introduce other vowel sounds, diphthongs etc. but I’m so confident now. I feel a better teacher of the English language. My knowledge has greatly improved. I was particularly impressed by the South African gifting, talenting and creativity. I hope to continually and consistently make a positive impact and practise what I was taught and what I learnt!

Excellent principles for the teaching of spelling. It is very thorough and impressive in how all aspects are answered. I can see how many elements could be incorporated in our literacy curriculum and benefit our pupils. However, I feel that in the international environment in which we teach, it is now not always possible to incorporate courses like THRASS at the exclusion of all other schemes, and think it would be more useful to dedicate a little more time on how it can fit into other systems.

Very interesting – perhaps you should split the course into Years 2-4 and then Years 5-8.

A really useful tool for teaching, reading and spelling. Some stages were discussed a little ‘speedily’!

Very interesting. Looking forward to using this in Year 1 and 2 and referring back to it in Years 3 and 4. Also want to use lots of ideas helping Years 7 and 8 to remember ‘other’ things.

The 26 letters are all solo dancers. It’s good when you’re a child to have them introduced by their rather silly names (A,B,C) and be told that you really can’t predict what they’ll do, when or where. Trying to choreograph them will lead to trouble. Putting them in little boxes and saying “that’s where they live” may well be fatal. Thanks – it was very interesting.

The methodology and fundamentals of the program are interesting and viable, particularly the grouping of phonemes. However, I found the delivery by Alan Davies rather disagreeable and, at times, aggressive. We needed much more practical activity as there was far too much listening. His treatment of some of the delegates when answering questions was rather rude and dismissive.

Great. Very educational. Very entertaining.

I wish I had been shown this as a child! Makes a little more sense now. Hopefully by the third course I might have it! It certainly has made a difference to my teaching but also to my own spelling!

A great opportunity to learn from elsewhere in the world about using different letters and sounds. Though the course was short, I have learnt more than what I knew before!

Very useful and interesting. A real eye-opener for me. I will implement the new ideas straight away.

An excellent teaching initiative – very interesting and it makes a lot of sense. I’m not sure if we will be able to implement it fully but I would like to try parts of it. Quite full on. I now need time to read up and digest all of the information (and watch the complimentary DVD). It was very worthwhile.

At last hope that small children won’t be hammered with ‘a’ for apple, ‘b’ for ball at age 3. I loved all the music and the pictures. Perhaps my young grandchildren will all learn this way. I hope so. Thanks for a revitalising two days.

Excellent presentation and teaching. I had many lights turned on and my aim is to go out, spread the news and contribute towards turning on lights in young minds.

If I had been taught with THRASS I would have found school a lot easier! It was a very informative two days and I look forward to introducing it to my class.
