The
course was very interesting and it will be very useful, to use the THRASS system
to teach the school children. I am very happy that this THRASS system is being
introduced. I will like to give a very big thank you to Mrs Hilary Davies for
coming to Ghana to introduce the THRASS to us.
Wonderful and helpful. It has been very beneficial for me and am going to use it
all out to help children and people around me who need it. Well done Hilary for
making literacy much simpler for teachers.
Very useful because I have learnt new and easier ways to help the weak children
I assist learn how to spell, read and write and I have also learnt a whole lot
of phonics I never knew.
Very educative. I now have good working knowledge of the use of phonemes and
graphemes to help my pupils read, spell as well as handwrite. Thankyou, THRASS.
This 2-day course will be invaluable to our wide range of pupils with different
learning styles and learning difficulties with literacy. It will add much more
fun to an otherwise mundane subject of teaching phonics. Well done on producing
a clear, precise and well laid out guide to teaching, reading, handwriting and
spelling which will also help parents, the first teachers of children. Many
thanks and we hope that this will be the start of a fruitful, long relationship.
I think the course will be very useful as a tool for effectively teaching
learners at any level. This will make our job as teachers of English easier.
This course has been very useful because it has provided me with ideas to assist
pupils with reading and spelling difficulties. It has also equipped me with a
broader perspective to tackle the subject.
Very useful. It has broadened my knowledge and sharpened my skill in my
teaching. I have really grasped much better, scientific approach to imparting
literacy, i.e. reading, spelling and handwriting skills to the pupils I teach at
all levels. I see myself having acquired enormous skills to apply to achieve
targets for children with different forms of reading/writing problems. Also, as
a Drama teacher, I see the use of Music and Dance as a splendid strategy to
shirk off the boredom my pupils sometimes experience. I personally wish I could
have such sessions from time to time. NOT IN DOSES PLEASE!
This has been a sort of refresher course for me because it sent me back to those
days I was in school learning English language in detail especially phonology. I
have enjoyed every bit of this course and I would be pleased if these sessions
would be regular to update us on what is current in teaching literacy.
This program has been helpful and educative. A new dimension of phoneme/grapheme
has been studied. Please keep me updated with new developments from THRASS.
Very beneficial and revolutionary, What really impressed me was the study of the
phoneme [X]. Do you know that over here in Ghana, some pre-schools as well as
some elementary schools using the old phonics system are fond of representing
this sound with grapheme ‘X’ in the word Xylophone? That’s incredible, isn’t it?
That is why I give you a thumbs up for this “educational evangelism”. God bless
you.
Very useful. Already my handwriting has changed. I will therefore be able to
help other children with “bad” handwriting. The subject will also be taught
effectively.
I found the course very useful in developing all aspects of literacy within all
age ranges. It was very thorough although this would have to be adapted for each
situation. It has made the teaching of reading, writing and spelling more
meaningful. It will be useful in all aspects of life regardless of age. I intend
to make use of it in teaching at school and helping my own child.
I have gained a lot of new insight into teaching reading, writing and spelling
of English language. The pictures and keywords are especially helpful. I hope my
children will benefit a lot from this. I also wish there will be updates from
revisions and communication of same from time to time. Thanks.
I’ve really enjoyed this program and also think the two days was too short. I
want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to you and your husband for
THRASS. May the good lord give you more knowledge and the ability to throw more
light on how to use phonics. Hope to see you again soon.
This has been a real eye-opener. I wish I had this when I was young, but am glad
the kids can now learn how to read, write and spell in a much easier and fun
way. Keep up the good work!
Intensive and very educative. I have really learnt a lot. Thank you very much
for introducing this THRASS program into schools. It will really help the
children and we the teachers as well.
Good for how to teach THRASS but I did not hear much about the link between
THRASS and reading. It was not clear how to take students from the chart to
actually reading, especially because letters make so many different sounds. I’m
not sure how students apply it when reading a book or writing.
Very clear description of what THRASS is. I’m still not sure about how children
put it to good use to help them with early reading and writing. I have learnt a
lot about how to teach THRASS which I feel is very different from teaching good
reading, writing and handwriting. I think the tool of THRASS could have some
good purposes for older children and for children who struggle to learn to read
in the normal ways. I’d love it to have kinaesthetic links that don’t distract
from the phoneme (e.g. a cat’s meow teaches meow as a phoneme for c e.g. cat).
I’m sorry that I have some difficulties with the approach and it’s too late in
the weekend for a clear report! Fundamentally though … I think it’s important to
teach transferable, and culturally sensitive skills for reading, writing,
spelling and handwriting for our ever changing clients of International
students. If we teach THRASS to pre-school (3 year old) and (PreK) 4 year olds
and then they go to another school, I would feel that they had ‘lost’ a lot of
time. They would have gained some ‘language/vocabulary’ but there are 100’s of
ways of doing that.
Course gave me a lot of food for thought and gave me more confidence in teaching
THRASS as part of our whole school policy. Would have liked to have seen some of
the videos or see you working with a class. Main thought at the moment is how to
‘extend’ it for older kids. I would (as you suggest) use lots of different
strategies, including emphasising word families, meaning historical etymological
roots. Would like to have seen more practical ideas for extension. Many thanks
for coming.
It has really done me a lot of good because with this knowledge I know it will
go a long way.
I really enjoyed the course because it has helped me to know more about phonemes
and graphemes.
Very successful and beneficial. Actually it has really refreshed my memory and
added more to my teaching skills. It will go a long way to help my pupils. I
suggest in future we should have more days!
Insightful. It has broadened my scope of study and I must say that I haven’t
regretted coming.
I can see where using THRASS in the classroom is useful. I like the fact that it
uses analytic and synthetic methods in phonetic teachings. The materials are
nice. I worry that this is a holistic sort of method. You cannot teach one
portion without the other. For those children coming into the system later
(2nd-3rd grade, 7-8 years) it may be hard for them to have a “common ground”
with peers.
Very thorough explanation of THRASS. Many different aspects to it which involves
children in a fun way. Some good knowledge imparted with the 24 consonant
phonemes, 20 vowel phonemes. However, the presentation seems very unattached to
literature and very focussed on memorisation of the chart order and not on
helping children explore and discover the possibilities and record that.
Navigating the chart seems to be more important than getting meaning from
reading. You were a lovely and lively presenter and I appreciate the work you
put into this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
This course has been a wonderful presentation. It has been well articulated. The
contents will go a long way to enhance the teaching of English in our schools
especially at the pre-school and the lower primary. I want to suggest that,
subsequent training courses should take a period of seven days so as to make
room for more activities. Well done! Davies Hilary. See you again.
