GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE
MILTON KEYNES, AUG 31-SEPT 1, 2005

Portable Document Format

I thought the course was excellent – very inspiring! I cannot wait to get started with it. I would really like to see this programme implemented in all schools.

A really interesting and totally logical course which has not only helped me to consider how children can learn about our language but also about how much easier this system is for those who teach those children. What I want to know is why wasn’t I taught this technique as a child! Keep up the great work. You have motivated, encouraged and wowed me with THRASS so thank-you!

Alan was an entertaining and enthusiastic tutor with superb subject knowledge. The explanations were clear and comprehensive with many relevant anecdotes. It has encouraged me to use THRASS immediately with my children - enthusiasm is infectious – we will learn together.

This course has been brilliant – I only wish I could have done it years ago. It has filled in all the gaps and answered the questions that I have had over the years teaching young children to move on much more quickly than using other approaches. You have been an engaging speaker allowing us to take in a lot of new information very rapidly.

Blown away – what an honest simple approach to spelling. It eliminates all types of magic and trickery in literacy that prevents children’s access to literacy. It is such a practical multisensory approach that builds on and uses children’s everyday use of language – it will appeal to all learners. Alan excellently presents this empowering programme and I wish it had been available to me as a child. I am leaving inspired and more knowledgeable about language to raise standards.

A fantastic course, which was well put together and even better presented. All singing, all dancing. I can’t wait to use it in the classroom!

Finally phonics that make sense. Really enjoyed the course. Lots of information to take in but once in the classroom it will soon become clearer. The computer programme will be a fantastic use both for the children and for the teachers.

A very enjoyable course, demonstrating common sense strategies for Literacy teaching. The presentation was engaging, clear and easy to understand demonstrating Alan’s commitment and passion. The computer programme was excellent and will prove extremely useful in the classroom.

Fabulous! So “real world” for children and I have experience with SEN children who would thrive with THRASS strategy. Great presentation. Would prefer two and a half-day length. Lot to take in and all-important. Very excited to take into class with confidence from the benefit of training.

Absolutely fantastic – ‘the missing link’. Presentation – appropriate pace. Breaks – good length. Use of resources ‘empowering’. Honest, but not patronising. Impressive use of people’s names. Good range of styles of presentation.

Very valuable. Makes perfect sense. Clearly presented. Gives all children the best chance to become truly literate. A starting point for a different way of looking at education and children.

Course was fantastic. I have done the two days before about two years ago but it was nice to refresh knowing this time it will be a whole school approach. I have enjoyed Alan’s presentation and feel it especially valuable when he talks of actual experiences with children and how it has worked for him. I am looking forward to following this up straight away in the classroom.

Very excited that my child will be in a THRASS school and will become a better reader, writer and speller than I am because of being told the truth from the beginning!

As I had no prior knowledge of THRASS I found this course invaluable. However, by the middle of the second day I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. Personally I always feel the need to put theory into practice so a) I would like to try out some of what I have learnt and then ‘come back’ for a refresher course and b) I would appreciate observing a teacher putting a THRASS lesson into practice. Having said all this I am definitely pleased with what I have learned and really enjoyed the presentation.

This was a brilliant course! It makes perfect sense – just wish I’d done it years ago! There was an awful lot of information to digest sometimes – needed a bit longer. I can’t wait to start using this approach. I would like to use it with a relative who has a history of speech problems, which is effecting his spelling.

Feeling a bit brain dead after 2 whole days, but it was brilliant to have someone talk about something he clearly believes in without being scared to say what we all think about current literacy schemes! It’s not ‘rocket science’, just common sense. I look forward to using it with the children. Thankyou.

Very good. THRASS is just as good (no better) than it was but still just as valuable.

Done it before but good, useful to refresh. Interested in working to move it forward. Very inspiring.

Fantastic course. I really enjoyed it and found it very interesting. I shall be using THRASS at home with my own children as I think they will actually enjoy learning.

Well presented, made you think! Need some time to digest. Glad of the reference books supplied. Wish this had been in place for my own children. They would not have the problems they now have.

The training was well presented, very good resources. There was a lot to take in over the two days, as he went over one bit we had moved on to the next, a lot to take in. Overall the training for THRASS was very good. Will be good to carry on with in the school. Thankyou.

Very good course. Very informative. Lively and well delivered. I learnt a lot. I am looking forward to using the website.

Lots of useful information, too much at times! Well presented.

A very good course but too much packed into two days. I found it hard towards the end to keep taking the information in.

I have enjoyed finding out about THRASS after hearing about it but feel I would need quite a bit more time to grasp it all. I therefore wouldn’t feel confident teaching it in a class yet but as I am a Nursery Nurse I am able to work alongside someone who does have prior knowledge of it. It certainly is logical.

Good fun, like the ideas of using a code that fits all spellings. Perhaps need to be more specific about transferring graphemes to words outside the keyword list. Can children see outside e.g. would you take a section and look for alternatives, e.g. doctor and factor and teacher and further.

A very challenging and informative course. Whew! Many thanks for explaining the science of the English language. I look forward to using it in the classroom. Alan was very approachable and knowledgeable of his subject and very passionate.

Very valuable course for teaching reading and spelling across all year groups. The course was delivered with great clarity and personally I feel that I have grasped the concept of THRASS. I am really looking forward to implementing this programme in my class. Excellent course, thankyou.

Course was very well resourced and explained, although we were given a lot of information in a short space of time. It would have been a little easier to concentrate much more fully on the information presented if it had been separated into just mornings or afternoons (and I could have thought about it a little more!) Fabulous ideas and suggestions, and also very practical and funny.
