GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE
HAMPSHIRE, NOV 21-22, 2005

Portable Document Format

A wonderfully enlightening two days. After 30 years of teaching I wasn’t sure there would be much that was new. How wrong I was!

The most useful course I have ever been on in the thirteen years I have been teaching. Presentation was excellent, always interesting. I have never understood unstressed vowels and now I do!

Excellent course delivered with such expertise and enthusiasm. The knowledge and understanding that I have learned over these two days I hope will benefit many children throughout my career in teaching.

Very informative. Lots of practical suggestions to use. I had the misconception that THRASS was for younger children, but now realise the potential with my year 5/6 class. Now fired-up and ready to go!

Two days packed full of exciting activities I want to use and develop in school. Presentation excellent. Thank you Hilary. I want THRASS to be part of teaching throughout school, not just as an Intervention Programme. Excellent two days. Would like to have brought more staff with me on the course.

Many thanks for two informative days. I have enjoyed learning about THRASS and look forward to using it in the classroom. Well done Hilary for keeping us all alert with your enthusiasm and energy.

Thanks so much for two really inspiring days; I have learnt so much. I admire your breadth of knowledge, enthusiasm and energy. The passion for THRASS comes through; I will continue the messages with my staff. Our children will benefit from the two days my team have spent with you.

Excellent and very full. Very useful material given to us to help feed back to other school staff. All queries were dealt with fully. Wish this had been around when my two dyslexic sons were struggling.

A very enjoyable two days. We were given a very clear understanding of the THRASS programme and its objectives. The pace was good, each of the stages was modelled clearly and there were plenty of opportunities to try out activities and games.

A very interesting, informative course, full of ideas with plenty of resources available. An enjoyable two days, delivered expertly by a very informative lady who was obviously totally committed to THRASS.

Very useful course. Lots of practical ideas that we’ll be able to use back at school. Feel that I have a much better understanding of phonics and why children spell words in certain ways.

This was an inspiring course, which has sent me off eager to get started with my Y3s. It has answered many of the problems I meet regularly with children taught the ‘Old Phonics’ way. Hilary was lively, enthusiastic and professional in her delivery with an obvious depth of experience at ‘the coalface’! The resources are attractive and well-made. Two enjoyable and thought-provoking days.

The two days have been very interesting. I just want to get started with my class now.

I appreciated the opportunity to look at resources and have all their possibilities clearly illustrated. The course has enthused me to develop further my use of THRASS and recommend it for use within North Yorkshire. May I make a ‘plug’ for more courses in the North of England? It’s been a long way to come.

The course gave me a very good overview of THRASS, beginning to end and a very thorough introduction into each stage, with games and activities. I feel I understand what THRASS has set out to teach the children, particularly using the four learning types to help the children access the scheme. A very good and inspiring two days.

Excellent. Hilary was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She answered all questions which were asked without hesitation. I am now much clearer about what I need to do with the materials already in our school. Can’t wait to get back to the children. Thanks to the host school for the facilities.

A very enjoyable and informative course. Hilary was very easy to listen to and to understand. It has inspired me to take this knowledge back to school and help the children in my class to have a better understanding of the English language.

Very informative and can’t wait to use it in the class. I feel it will be of great value to our children who have learning difficulties. A great two days – lots to think about.

Enjoyable, interesting and informative. I look forward to returning to school and working with these new ideas.

Presentation – very good. Resources – excellent. Timing – on time.

I believe this course is very useful for newly arrived students from abroad. I will use the whole programme in my school. I am sure it will be very useful for EAL/SEN students.

I found it very useful and enjoyable – thank you. As literacy manager I now have a much better understanding of what should be being taught throughout the school and now have ideas of how to refresh teachers’ knowledge and what to monitor. One of the things I hoped to get from the course was more ideas for upper KS2, to use THRASS regularly within classes. I do now have more ideas and I’m looking forward to trying them out. I do feel that I could do with more input in this area – would you run half-day or day courses specifically for KS2? I might change my mind once I’ve started as the things I’ve learnt may roll into other ideas. I really enjoyed the two days and found them really useful.

This has been a very valuable course. Hilary was very enthusiastic and motivated in teaching the THRASS stages.

Very useful course, well presented within time constraints. Has provided me with a useful starting point and some ways to explain apparent anomalies – our staff will question everything. I liked the way that ‘----but this doesn’t follow the rule’ can be accounted for in a reasonably logical way. I am particularly impressed with the consistency of the approach and its all-inclusive nature – teaching phonics has always been a problem in the way there is learning/unlearning/re-learning and THRASS seems to have addressed this very well. I am looking forward to enthusing LSAs and Teachers in my school.

Excellent course – thank you to Hilary for her impressive and enthusiastic presentation. Your knowledge is phenomenal and now my brain hurts! Have you done any courses in the USA? If so, I would be interested to hear details about locations, etc and how it was accepted by teaching staff.

It has been a very enjoyable two days. Lots of information to take on board, but Hilary was very good and kept me motivated.

This has been an extremely interesting and valuable two days. As an inexperienced LSA I now feel confident returning to my special needs children with a clear step-by-step programme to follow. I would like to see the programme introduced throughout the school but, even if it is not, I am able to use it with my own group of children independently. Thank you very much.

Second day helped to put more into place. Very well-presented. Interesting.

An excellent course. Found the information about phonetic alphabet fascinating. Am inspired!

An excellently well-presented and delivered course. A new insight into the teaching and learning of phonics. I will be looking at how to use the programme as a support teacher, with various groups and individuals in the different schools I visit in the London area.

An excellently presented and organised course. I thoroughly enjoyed the training and feel that I will be able to implement THRASS throughout my school. Thank you.

A great overview of the THRASS scheme which explains why we go through each stage and how they interlink. The enthusiasm is catching and humour kept me on course.

A really useful and interesting two days. I am looking forward to using THRASS. I think it will be particularly useful in developing spelling skills of the children I teach. Well-presented and paced delivery which really helped. Hilary is an excellent ‘trainer’. Resources themselves are of a very high quality.

A very informative, eye-opening course, delivered very professionally. Good use of props and resources.

A fantastic course! Has helped me make a lot of sense of the English language and how we should put that across when teaching children. Hilary had a lot of energy and helped us all to stay focussed. I feel that THRASS will help a lot in our school.

I really enjoyed the THRASS course. It is a very useful and enjoyable way to teach the children and it will be fun for them to progress with their speech and language, especially the Raps!

The course has been very useful to highlight ways to use the resources. As I have been shadow-teaching THRASS since Christmas 2004, I now feel confident to find new ways to use all the resources.

This course has been very useful in highlighting ways I can improve the spelling of my KS2 class, drawing attention to the possible choices of letters. I shall be able to implement the methods shown with all the abilities in the class. The course materials are clear and relevant.

I have learnt loads over the two days.

Very enjoyable, thank you. Hilary brought a range of your resources. I do feel that I can implement a lot of the ideas – it will be used/trialled in the Speech and Language base with those children whose literacy skills are very poor.

It needs to be whole-school to be effective.

A very coherent programme for reading and spelling. As a KS2 practitioner, I can see how this approach fosters an enquiry-based attitude to language and an interest in how our language is constructed. Thank you – all explanations were very clear. The course will support us in widening the programme into a whole-school initiative, rather than simply a resource for intervention groups.

These two days have been very busy, with lots of thought-provoking points. You gave an excellent introduction and guide to the programme. Your enthusiasm for children’s learning really shone through. It is quite a daunting prospect to begin the programme in our school and it would be good to hear of steps others have taken to implement THRASS. We are keen to get started though, and hope to see you on the Island (Isle of Wight) soon!

An excellent introduction to the THRASS project. Very interesting, thought-provoking, which will lead to lots of discussion back at school. Today’s training is the initial stage to implementing the THRASS programme throughout the whole school. From what we have heard and seen over the last two days, this should help to raise our standards in Literacy. Thank you for your enthusiasm.

What a fantastic way of making the English language not only understandable, but teachable, too. It really puts things into perspective and makes it straightforward and easy. The course was very informative, a lot to take in, in just two days, but I feel very enthusiastic. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing more of THRASS in the future.
