The National Project Director for Literacy will be appointed by the DFEE in March to lead and co-ordinate the LEA-based primary centres, recently announced by the Secretary of State. Alan Davies and Denyse Ritchie explain why the director should encourage the centres to use a phonographic method, not a phonic method, to teach literacy.
