Many pupils entering secondary
education have poorly developed literacy skills and a total lack of
confidence for tackling reading and written work. It is important
that they are enabled to build both skills and confidence from their
first days in a secondary school since there is ample evidence that
if pupils become disaffected in Year 7 their future educational
careers can be seriously compromised.
