At the OFSTED Literacy Conference, 7
December 1998, Tony Blair, defined phonics as "The skilled process
of teaching children how the 44 sounds in the English Language are
represented by a letter or group of letters". Alan Davies has
overwhelming evidence, from tens of thousands of written evaluations
by teachers worldwide, and many thousands of written evaluations by
teachers in the UK (from newly qualified teachers through to
headteachers and from foundation through to KS3) that there needs to
be a quality change in teacher training because teachers are not
confident, from the relatively poor phonics training that they
presently receive, or have previously received, in British
universities, to teach the 44 phonemes (speech-sounds) of spoken
English and the 120 keygraphemes (key spelling-choices) of written
English. It is recommended that the British Government gives Alan
Davies the opportunity to prove his case by allowing him to deliver
a demonstration course to 50-100 teachers, selected by government
officials to represent Foundation through to KS3, on what many
consider, worldwide, to be the best two-day professional development
course on English synthetic/analytic phonics.
