Questions One
The teaching of phonics is an essential component of any reading
programme. In South Africa teachers are being challenged to consider
phonics teaching in the light of ‘New Phonics’ and ‘Old Phonics’
approaches.
1.1. How would you define each of these approaches? What commercial
programmes do you associate with these two categories. Give reasons
for
associating the programmes with a specific category.

1.2. Which approach to phonics teaching do you favour? Give a well
considered response to this question, highlighting the strengths and
weaknesses of each of the approaches. Support the points you make
with
examples taken from your observations and wide reading.
(80 marks)

Accredited Certificate training course in June 2005.
