SOUND IT OUT IN
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

CAPE TOWN
[12 mins]

In May 2010 some of the THRASS UK team visited Western Cape. Three schools hosted presentations of the Sound It Out software programme and teachers in Western Cape were invited to attend. During the video we also see some THRASS lessons and hear teachers’ reactions to what they have seen. At Milnerton Primary School, Hilary Davies introduces Sound It Out to a class of children watched by local teachers. She invites individual children to come forward and use the interactive whiteboard to focus on Picture Location by finding certain pictures. She encourages the other children to find the pictures for themselves using their own individual desk size Picturecharts. At Sun Valley Primary School we first see a teacher who has chosen to focus on the (er) box in Vowel Row 2 (Box 2), the hardest box on the chart to learn! Some of the children have dressed up in costumes and others have brought in items linked to the keywords in the box. In the computer suite, Hilary uses Sound It Out and encourages the teachers to join in by using their own individual terminals. They are looking at the beginning and end pictures for each of the eight rows on the chart. At Sunlands Primary School, one of the teachers is asking the children to focus on the job of the letter ’b’ in the word ‘bird’, and then a small group of children have the opportunity to use Sound It Out on a Classmate PC. It is nice to see the children helping each other locate the correct spelling choices (graphemes). During the presentation to local teachers, Hilary uses the interactive Word Bank to focus on the different jobs that particular letters can do in different spelling choices (graphemes). There is a very positive reaction to Sound It Out from all the local teachers and they comment on how useful it will be across the age range. One teacher is particularly excited by the Family Word Selector, where users can access a list of ten family words containing the same keygrapheme. She describes it as “A dream come true!”
