GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

THRASS  TWO-DAY CERTIFICATE, GABORONE, BOTS, MAY 19 - 21, 2005

Portable Document Format

A lovely programme – how I wish I had learnt this system as a child! Laola is a thorough, efficient trainer, who inspired us, kept us interested and was able to relate the material to situations in our schools. The programme would be most beneficial to secondary school students –particularly for those who do not speak English. The simple logic behind this system is outstanding and left me searching for opportunities to use THRASS in my music lessons. I feel I have learnt enough to approach the teaching of THRASS with confidence and would consider further study in the subject.

Most enlightening. For the first time I understand how phonics works. Lively and very clear presentation. Step by step explanations will enable teachers to implement THRASS in their classes. They also have been shown how to use all the resources and encouraged to expand on the ways of using them. I am convinced that THRASS will help all our children and help us to provide quality education overall.

An excellent course. It has really put THRASS in perspective for me and has given me the confidence to make full use of the different THRASS aids. Information was logically set out, which made it so much easier to understand and apply. Well done!

THRASS is very good because it makes reading easier for all abilities. The teacher works smarter, not harder. Pupils can learn a lot of things in a very short period of time and enjoy it because of the variety of materials. The lecturer is experienced and easily imparted knowledge to the learners. The course was easily understood and I am sure in the future, I would want to study more about it.

This course has filled in many blanks. I feel that I can now prepare lessons with confidence and extend the children and use all those ‘dusty’ aids that we have! Thank you, Laola, for making this course interesting and alive.

An interesting course and easy for the learners. As a teacher, I like it, but find it challenging. It requires a lot of practise! Thanks. I will do my best!

The THRASS workshop has really helped me to highlight the modern ways of introducing the alphabet, reading and writing – especially letter formation, which is a major problem with the young children. With the knowledge I have gained, I am going to implement it during my teaching and learning process.

The THRASS course was an eye opener to me. It is a very good programme because there is a lot of repetition, which will enable a child to remember words taught, throughout the course. It is also good because it can be applied to other subjects – e.g. the raps can also be used in counting numbers. It also has a lot of reference materials.

Being a new school, the course came at the right time, which allows us to start with the right work. This will benefit both pupils and teachers. The course will definitely enrich us as a school and I believe we’ll go a long way in bringing up good readers, with good handwriting and spelling skills. I look forward to other THRASS courses.

The course is great for both teachers and pupils if it is well implemented in schools. I feel that there should be some practical follow-ups by observing some trained people applying the course. I also feel that the course should be a little bit longer –e.g. 5 days so that we really get immersed into the programme.

The THRASS programme is very educative. It opens up a wide range of good ideas for the child. It is full of fun, so much that children will enjoy and learn at the same time. For the teacher, it is not an overnight thing, but with practice, it is full of fun. I have learnt a lot. This is a journey I have started with THRASS!

I learnt a lot and feel that THRASS should be introduced to all teachers in all schools – including government schools – for the important and useful way in which teachers can begin to enjoy learning faster. It is indeed a better way of introducing children to learning – even slow learners can end up with something and can catch up a little faster than by using the previous methods, more so because it can be linked with other subjects.

A fantastic course. I did a study on how difficult it is for the African child – second language speaker – to spell when they are taught to pronounce sounds incorrectly. The solution to all spelling problems seems to have been found. The CD is a wonderful idea. It gives no room for mispronunciation. I am sure a lot of children will be speaking Standard English in ± 10 years to come. I think a lot of teachers will need refresher courses, because changing ones’ accent, style of teaching and habits can be difficult to break. Well done to Laola. A great job. Southern Africa needs this!

The course was well organised and I learnt a lot of things. I really look forward to imparting the knowledge and skills in this dynamic and comprehensive way.

I came to the course quietly kicking and screaming – I had a lot of work to do over the weekend! However, given that I was teaching THRASS on what I learnt from colleagues and the Teachers Guide, I found, with hindsight, that this course was just what I needed. I look back and see the holes and omissions in my teaching. I look forward and see with anticipation, how I can better help my weaker English students and bring in a wider variety of practical activities. I needed this training and now understand its aim and methodology.

Would be great if THRASS can be taken to every College of Education in Africa. Makes a great deal of sense! Very practical – uses the multi-sensory approach, which is the only way to teach anyone, anywhere in the world. Presented in a lively, down to earth, matter of fact way. Software, materials etc. excellent! Would need some time to absorb all the information, but I’m sure once it is used, it will have amazing results – already seen at Broadhurst School. Thank you for an excellent presentation and for sharing your knowledge, experience and wonderful anecdotes.
