Sound/Symbol Correspondence
One teaching programme which helps develop this correspondence is THRASS. Central to THRASS is the chart which shows that all 44 sounds (phonemes) of spoken English are represented by letters (graphemes). THRASS focuses upon knowledge of the alphabet and the naming of the (e.g. phoneme and grapheme). THRASS also teaches that it is not always one letter which makes one sound (a graph); it may be two letters (a digraph) or three letters (a trigraph).
