Two years ago we were very
sceptical about THRASS (Teaching Handwriting Reading And Spelling
Skills) in Neath Port Talbot. Some of us had read about the war
between synthetic and analytic phonics (you can use THRASS for both
approaches); some of us didn’t know our ‘a’s from our ‘e-l-b-o’s;
all of us were confused. What won us over?
An introductory session from the THRASS deviser Alan Davies
interested enough colleagues to set up a three-day certificated
course, and certainly Alan’s enthusiasm and expertise were
impressive. However, the deciding factor in the take-up of THRASS
across the LEA was the response of Reception and Infant teachers who
attended the training.
