Boost for understanding of dyslexia
in the Caribbean
Web Posted - Mon Feb 26 2007

THE Caribbean Dyslexia Association and
Centre is benefiting from a donation of more than three thousand
dollars from the British High Commissioner, Duncan Taylor. The sum
of $3 292 represents the proceeds from sponsorship Mr. Taylor
received for his participation in the Run Barbados 10K Race last
December.
Mr. Taylor, whose son is dyslexic, takes a close interest in the
provision of assistance to children with learning difficulties. He
admires the work carried out by the Caribbean Dyslexia Association
and Centre, and when he presented the cheque to its Director, Yvonne
Spencer, he told her that he was delighted to be able to support
such a worthy cause in this small way.
In response, Mrs. Spencer said the money would be used to contribute
to the cost of hosting two courses during the summer holiday for at
least 20 Caribbean teachers of dyslexic students. She identified the
courses as psychometric (intelligence) testing and THRASS -
teaching, handwriting, reading and spelling skills.
We want to get our teachers more qualified in this field so that
they are able to recognise the signs of dyslexia among their
students, she said, expressing gratitude to Mr. Taylor for the
donation.
Mrs. Spencer regrets that dyslexia is still not getting the
attention that it rightfully deserves, saying that people still
scoff at the disorder. At the same time however, she is encouraged
that education leaders are recognising the value of organisations
like the Caribbean Dyslexia Association and Centre.
The courses will be conducted by UK education-psychologists, Alan
MacGregor and Alan Davies
