GUIDED TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS AND PARENTS

LA LUCIA JUNIOR PRIMARY AND
CHRISTOPHER ROBIN PRE-PRIMARY

This video gives an opportunity to see THRASS being taught on a day-to-day basis with various classes at La Lucia Junior Primary School and Christopher Robin Pre-Primary School (in La Lucia, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa), during impromptu visits to the schools.

The video begins in a classroom in La Lucia Junior Primary School, where children are working on spelling choices from the consonant section of the class-size THRASS picturechart. They are being asked to suggest words from the ‘shark, station, chef’ consonant box and they come up with some excellent suggestions – such as ‘vibration’, which they even make a super attempt at spelling! The children are also able to identify where in the word the phoneme lies and under which keyword the suggested word should be placed. Later in the video, another class can be observed working on the same phoneme. What is striking is the children’s enthusiasm and eagerness to participate in the activities. In another classroom, we can watch and hear the children doing a THRASS rap, whilst locating the pictures on the desk-size picturecharts.

Our next two scenes show how the THRASS SING-A-LONG resources can be used really easily to make lessons both enjoyable and educational. The children firstly sing-a-long and do actions in the classroom to the phoneme song, ‘Fly ,fly, fly, little bird’, where they are learning to spell bird with one ‘b’ and rabbit with two, almost without realising it! Following this, in an energetic music and movement lesson, we can see the children having great fun doing the ‘Rock and roll jive’. This clip shows how, with just a few small props and the SING-A-LONG CD, children can derive great pleasure from their lessons while they learn.

In the following two scenes, we can see children doing a THRASS rap, whilst locating the associated pictures on their desk-size picturecharts. We see children doing supplementary work with colouring pictures and overwriting letters to reinforce their learning. The clips show how much the children are enjoying their lessons and how easily they can locate the pictures on their charts.

The teachers and the children in their classes are clearly very proud of their achievements.
