The
front cover of the SIMPLE STEPS PACK COURSE LEAFLET stated:
Welcome to the SIMPLE STEPS PACK. On
this front cover is a flag. On the flag is written, 'I.P.A. - the international
way'. I.P.A. stands for International Phonetic Alphabet and as its name
suggests, it is a system used throughout the world (in dictionaries and
translation books e.g. the LITTLE OXFORD DICTIONARY ISBN 0 19 861188 9). Why is
the International Phonetic Alphabet used throughout the world? The International
Phonetic Alphabet has a 'symbol' for each speech sound we make, so making up a
complete phonetic alphabet, so those who know the International Phonetic
Alphabet system can use it to work out, or record, the pronunciation of any
spoken word in the world.
The sub-title of this pack is 'A
simple guide to speaking, spelling, writing and reading' as the assumption is
made that the best way to find out about the International Phonetic Alphabet is
to start from scratch. So, in starting from scratch, the SIMPLE STEPS PACK is
also a 'simple guide to speaking, spelling, writing and reading'. For this
reason the SIMPLE STEPS PACK has been used by people of all ages - from
individuals as young as the age of 3 to large groups of adults. The large groups include: 'A' Level students, overseas students, parents, adults
with 'special needs' (20-30 adults, one teacher and a support team), adults with
dyslexia (15-20 adults, one teacher) and children with dyslexia (10-15
children, one teacher). The individuals include all sorts and all ages.
It is a good idea to think of the
SIMPLE STEPS PACK as a game that uses sounds and letters to develop and improve
human concentration and memory. The aim of the game is for you, and others you
may come to teach, to try to do well in all of the memory tasks. Will the SIMPLE
STEPS PACK develop and improve your memory? Will the SIMPLE STEPS PACK help you
to 'work out, or record, the pronunciation of any spoken word in the world'?
Let's see.
All that is needed for you to play the
game, besides this pack, is a tape recorder, a pencil or pen, and a lined
exercise book (preferably with the lines 8 millimetres apart). See if you can
work your way through the SIMPLE STEPS PACK starting with the PRE-PACK
ASSESSMENT. Ready?
